Time for a review of the Meizu M8 – a cheap smartphone, which in terms of components and equipment is a direct competitor for LG Q7, Samsung Galaxy A6, also Xiaomi Redmi 6. Is it worth buying a Meizu M8?
After two weeks of intensive testing, it's time to review the Meizu M8 , and therefore the smartphone relatively compact and without the indentation in the display. A smartphone that is theoretically quite interesting and noteworthy. And finally, a smartphone that disappointed me, not enchanted as competition. All the more so because we are talking about a proposal costing PLN 850. I invite you to read – this is the Meizu M8 test .
Very traditional design
Meizu M8 does not surprise with any appearance , and certainly does not stand out with anything special on the background of similarly priced devices. It's a good looking but rather conservatively designed phone. The back plate, very pleasant to the touch, is made of metal, without any plastic inserts, as well as metalized strips. This is the advantage over Xiaomi smartphones from the low segment. On the front, on the other hand, we have glass (I did not find detailed information on the used shell), which were bent on the long sides to improve the visual experience. This design is very well known to me, especially from Chinese smartphones. The front panel was kept in a minimalist tone . We will not find any unnecessary things here – only the display, the camera, the sensor of the existing light, the loudspeaker for chatting and the notification diode, well recessed into the recess. There was also a large chin and upper frame, which is slimmer, but still large in size. The fingerprint reader can be found on the back wall – it has been gently recessed into the casing is surrounded by a silver frame. Its location is correct, so that the index finger puts itself on it. It is worth knowing, however, that it is smaller than the competition. Time for a quick look at location of ports, sensors and buttons on the housing . The lower edge was occupied by a multimedia speaker, a microUSB 2.0 port, a 3.5mm mini-jack connector, and a microphone. The tray for the hybrid SIM card slot (nanoSIM + nanoSIM / nanoSIM + microSD) hit the left side. On the right there is a switch and a volume control bar. The equipment lacked a secondary microphone. Meizu M8 is a good-looking smartphone , as well as a good one, but there is not a breath of freshness in it. On the other hand, it is difficult to expect a super modern design from a smartphone costing about PLN 850.
The battery offers up to 1.5 days of operation
The enclosure has a 3100 mAh battery , which in my opinion is perfectly adequate for this device and ensures good working time on one charge cycle. Meizu M8 offers 1.5 days of operation , without having to reach for the charger with moderate use. The working time is the one I expected, although it is worth adding that with more intensive use of the smartphone you will have to charge it every day. If, on the other hand, you decide that the phone is to be used as a game console or GPS navigation, unfortunately, it will not last even until the evening. [wptab style = "4" title = "Normal use"] [slug test = "battery" order = "desc" selected = "22776" virtual = "pcmark-work-2" type = "single" product_id = "22776, 22766,22694,22736,22698,22666,22716,22620,22550,22746 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Games "] [test slug =" battery "order =" desc "selected = "22776" virtual = "battery-manhattan-3" type = "single" product_id = "22776,22766,22694,22736,22698,22666,22716,22620,22550,22746"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = " 4 "title =" Loading time "] [test slug =" battery "virtual =" loading-ac "order =" asc "selected =" 22776 "type =" single "product_id =" 22776,22766,22694,22736,22698 , 22666,22716,22620,22550,22746 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] The full charging cycle is definitely too long, as this time is up to three hours (2:59). This is a long time, but it is not surprising – there was no fast charging technology, despite the fact that I always loaded the smartphone with a Huawei Quick Charge (5V / 2A, 9V / 2A), because I did not receive any of them in the set provided for the tests. A 15-minute charge translates into 16%, and after thirty minutes, this value increases to 28%. There is no energy saving mode , thanks to which we can manage processes in the background, and disable synchronization, and thus extend the working time when we are away from the socket. In the settings there are two modes of operation – intelligent energy saving and maximizing energy saving. Activating the last profile will switch the standard interface to simplified (access only to the basic functions – clock, phone and SMS).
A good screen with a malfunctioning light sensor
Meizu proposes a screen with a diagonal of 5.7 "and HD + resolution (1440 x 720 pixels) . It is an IPS type matrix with an 18: 9 aspect ratio with rounded corners. Screen parameters are therefore decent for a mid-priced smartphone and thus allow for comfortable web browsing and use of the phone. Of course, at a price of PLN 850, you can easily find smartphones that use screens with Full HD + resolution, but PPI at the level of about 283 points is a sufficient value. A trained eye will see individual pixels from close range, but if the font is not ragged, do you need something more? [wptab style = "4" title = "AdobeRGB"] [test slug = "test-colors" order = "desc" selected = "22776" virtual = "color-adobergb" type = "single" product_id = "22776,22766 , 22694,22736,22698,22666,22716,22620,22550,22746 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" sRGB "] [test slug =" test-colors "order =" desc "selected = "22776" virtual = "kolor-srgb" type = "single" product_id = "22776,22766,2264,24,22736,22698,22666,22716,22620,22550,22746"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = "4 "title =" Maximum brightness "] [test slug =" screen-battery "virtual =" TEST_JACITY TEST "order =" desc "selected =" 22776 "type =" single "product_id =" 22776,22766,22694,22736,22698, 22666,22716,22620,22550,22746 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] The maximum brightness is at a very high level – 606 cd / m2 , so that during sunny days there will be no problem with the readability of the screen. I do not have any reservations to the minimum illumination which, according to our calibrator, is 1 cd / m2. This is a value so low that it prevents the use of a smartphone – so it is worth to rely on the sensor of the existing light. Unless, of course, it wants to work properly , because in most cases it is able to adjust the backlight intensity only on the main screen. Do not know why he does not do it in applications, and for that he is laborious and does not always choose the right level. The color rendering in the AdobeRGB palette is 73.2%. Coverage of sRGB scale colors reaches 98.3%, and in DCI P3 79.5%. These values are therefore of a good standard, bearing in mind the price range, although I know several smartphones in which the calibration was better. The manufacturer took care of several additional screen settings, including the eyesight protection mode, or the ability to adjust the color temperature. It is also scaling the application to the full screen.
A double camera is doing well
The main camera – characteristics, quality of photos and videos
Meizu M8 is equipped with a set of two lenses. One of them is the main camera, while the additional one is to blur the background in the background, creating a bokeh effect. In the case of Meizu M8, a 12MP main camera with ƒ / 2.2 light was used, as well as an additional lens with a resolution of five million pixels (here also ƒ / 2.2). In addition, there is PDAF. You have to admit that the characteristics do not fall on your knees, although from what is on paper, the final effect, and therefore the photos, matters more. -> See the example photos in full resolution Photographs taken during the day, and therefore when the lights are the most look good – they are characterized by an appropriate amount of recorded details, nicely reproduced colors, as well as a decent tonal range . In most cases, they are noise-free, although the machine has some problems with the selection of appropriate parameters, because we can occasionally notice problems with sharpness. After all, in this class I have no reservations about the camera. Deciding to take pictures under worse lighting conditions is different, but if you do not do it in the Egyptian darkness, it is quite tolerable. We will record movies in the maximum Full HD resolution (1080p), at 30 frames per second. They hold the same level as the photographs. What worries, however, is the defective autofocus , which has a big problem with sharpening what is close in the foreground and washing out the other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTbU2WobucU
The front camera gives advice
On the front there is a 5 MP camera with ƒ / 1.9 light . The software that beautifies the face comes to te3go. Selfie camera is doing well and I am happy with its capabilities, and at the same time positively surprised.
Only average efficiency
Meizu M8 has theoretically meaningful components – MediaTek helio P22 in combination with 4GB of RAM . This is a set that proved that it is able to embarrass many smartphones, even the more expensive ones. Will it be the same this time? MediaTek helio P22 is a SoC system composed of an octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, which has a maximum clock frequency of 2.0 GHz. Graphics are responsible for the PowerVR GE8320 graphics chip with a maximum clock frequency of up to 650 MHz. The manufacturer opted for a 12-nanometer TSF FinFET lithographic process.Unfortunately, the Meizu M8 is not able to match the flow of Xiaomi Redmi 6 , because it has not been refined. The set used just goes worse in popular synthetic tests than smartphones of similar configuration in which Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 is present. During everyday use, sometimes power is lacking for smooth and comfortable work with the device. Drops of liquidity are manifested by downtimes or extended waiting time for loading applications , they are nothing foreign. Of course, not always, although in most cases they are visible and on the smartphone with this amount should not take place. On average it is also with graphical efficiency , because PowerVR GE8320 can catch a shortness of breath. Simple games work fine, but the more graphically advanced ones have liquidity problems, and often run on medium or low details. Asphalt 9: Legends is a challenge that you can already feel during the show. This means that enthusiasts of games will certainly not be happy, but people who play sporadically will not feel this problem. The software has been enriched by the manufacturer with a few additions, including the ability to control gestures, although it does not work as well as in the smartphones of other brands, namely Huawei and Xiaomi. A major challenge is opening recently used applications , and sometimes there is also a problem with leaving the application. Among other things, there is a smartphone manager , although it has been quite strangely named security . We can manage files, accumulator, data usage or permissions in it. There is also a store with the producer's applications, themes and also a very, very useful tool in which we have access to flashlight, compass, level, ruler, magnifying glass, as well as volume measurement. There is of course a mode of operation in two windows . The function allows you to use two applications at the same time – to activate it, simply enter the menu of open applications and hold the preview window to display additional settings.
Equipment: could be better
An overview of the equipment in the Meizu M8 will start with the built-in memory and biometric security. 64 GB of internal memory have been reserved for data – approximately 48GB is available for the user. Of course, the memory can be extended by an additional 128 GB by using a microSD card reader. The fingerprint reader placed on the back panel serves its purpose and is a good biometric security – it responds fairly quickly and is rarely mistaken. Another protection is Face Unlock. Here is very poorly – the smartphone rarely recognizes the face properly, and if it does, it does not go to the main screen but remains on the lock screen.Communication infrastructure includes the newer solutions that can be found in not every cheap Dual SIM smartphone. We receive the WiFi module in the IEEE802.11 a / b / g / n standard, Bluetooth 5.0 with BLE , GPS with GLONASS, as well as a double (traditional) SIM card slot that supports nano-standard cards. During the tests I did not notice any blatant deviations from the standards I was used to. The microUSB port in 2.0 standard was dedicated for wired communication. The sound coming from the loudspeaker is flat, but loud enough , if the smartphone lies down, because it is placed on the back panel, which I mentioned in the case of construction. However, it works well when signaling notifications and incoming calls, but nothing else. The box was out of headset . After connecting the private I found out that the transducer used is decent and the maximum volume is satisfactory. The sound quality itself may not be particularly exciting, although it is far from a tragedy.
Summary and evaluation
I do not like to write negatively about the tested smartphones, because it means only one thing – something went wrong and probably the manufacturer will not fix it, and the equipment is written off. However, in the case of Meizu M8 I have to do it, as I did with the LG Q7 or ARCHOS Diamond alpha +. Because if the system itself does not work as it should, then using the phone is not a pleasure at all, right? Unfortunately, this is the case with the Meizu M8, which has several advantages and would be able to fight for the customer in its price range, if it was not for optimization problems, which cuts, slows down and has downtime . I have not noticed such situations when testing a competitor, which is, after all, Xiaomi Redmi 6.Meizu M8 has some solid advantages , which mean that despite the mentioned shortcoming, it is worth considering buying it. A traditional display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9, and therefore without a popular indentation on the screen, is a plus . The screen parameters themselves are also suitable, making the use of a smartphone pleasant. The working time on the battery is a little over the standard, but it's nice that the manufacturer has put a few additional energy saving modes, which in extreme situations can significantly extend the working time of the smartphone. I am also satisfied with the Meizu M8 photographic capabilities , although it is known that he is far from the flagship models, but the quality of photography is at a good level. Of course, those made during the day, because the night falls not better than the competition. It also enjoys a lot of memory built into data and applications, so you do not need to buy a microSD card and cancel the dualSIM function at the same time. I leave the final decision on the purchase of the Meizu M8 to my clients and I advise you to consider all of them for and (above all) against. [Show_rating]
