Poles are eager to use new technological solutions in the field of finance. Immediately after the Czech Republic, we pay for contactlessly in Europe. Therefore, no one is surprised by the large interest in mobile payments – below we compare the three most popular methods – Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay – check who and when can use them.
As always in the case of finance, the question is – are these solutions safe ? Methods that are currently being marketed are created to be as sure as possible to the people using them. First of all, it is worth noting that if you lose your contact card, the person who finds it can do even several transactions worth PLN 50 without entering a PIN, so the money can quickly disappear from the account. However, if you lose your phone on which the mobile payment application is installed, the finder is unable to use the card connected to it. How is this possible? Read below.
At the beginning, we will learn about the payment method, which in Poland came relatively recently, because it is with us only from June 19, 2018 . Since then, however, she managed to win many fans. During the first few days, there were over 150,000 of them, and their number is constantly growing. The service consists of using the telephone instead of a payment card. Just approach the device to the payment terminal and approve the payment on your smartphone. Unfortunately, there is a limited list of models on which you can use the application, these are: iPhone 6, iPhone 6Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6sPlus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8Plus, iPhone X and Apple Watch, and also iPad mini3, iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad (from 5th generation) and iPad Pro.
Apple uses different authorization solutions for each Apple camera and, in the case of the iPhone 8 and older models, the Home button from TouchID should be pressed before approaching the terminal. If you use the iPhone X, you need to press the lock button twice and scan the face using FaceID. For Apple Watch, just press the side button twice. In addition, some terminals may require a PIN. In addition to the above-mentioned ways regarding security issues. Apple also secures the card number so that no one knows it, including the company. Only the transaction parties have access to it. The card number is encrypted and does not leave a trace on the device. To secure the card, it is also assigned a DAN number, which is to be an additional difficulty in the case of attempted theft. In addition, it never goes to Apple servers. We are therefore secure in terms of both losing money and data.
Change of the card
Apple Pay allows you to enter several cards into the application and during the transaction select the one you want to pay in a given situation. Changing the card before payment means:
- If you have an iPhone X, you must press the lock button twice and touch the selected card on the screen, then bring the smartphone to the terminal.
- For iPhone 8 and older models, bring the smartphone to the terminal without unlocking and touch the card on the screen.
- If someone is using Apple Watch, please slide your finger on the screen and just select the card.
The application is available to clients of such banks as: Alior Bank, BGŻ BNP Paribas, Bank Pekao, Getin Bank, mBank, Nest Bank, PKO Bank Polski, Raiffaisen Polbank, Santander Bank Polska.
Another application that allows you to pay using mobile devices is Google Pay. This is the successor of Android Pay – a system that made mobile payments possible in November 2016. The current application exists from January 2018 . Its possibilities are not much different from Apple Pay – we will pay for it everywhere, where contactless payments are available. Several hundred thousand people in Poland are already using Google Pay. It is a solution that does not require an internet connection and also how Apple Pay allows the addition of multiple cards. The system can be used on any device that has an Android version, a minimum of 4.4, and an NFC module . It is a standard module that allows data transfer between devices.
The service consists in bringing the device closer to the terminal. An animation should appear on the smartphone screen that confirms the transaction. If you pay by watch, the process looks very similar. You should wake up the watch, enter the menu and select Google Pay, and then bring it closer to the terminal. Like Apple Pay, Google has its security systems. Also here, the data is encrypted, so no one has access to them, even the seller, with whom we pay using the telephone. Such persons will only see the assigned VAN number. For the sake of security, Google removes it after unlocking the device so that it does not fall into the wrong hands. The application is available to clients of such banks as: Alior Bank, BGŻ BNP Paribas, Citi Handlowy, Eurobank, Getin Bank, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, Nest Bank, Orange Finanse, Plus Bank, Raiffeisen Bank, Santander Bank Polska and T-mobile Usługi Banking.
At the end, we will look at an application that is not yet available in Poland , but its conquest of global markets is awe-inspiring. In Europe, Samsung Pay has only mastered Spain, but it is constantly increasing its number of recipients. The slow process of expansion into new markets is due to the high precision of the work carried out, so if the application also enters Poland, we can expect something that is intended to arouse admiration. Samsung in its work focuses on making the application very easy to use and available to everyone. That is why the list of banks with which he cooperates is constantly growing. In comparison to previous mobile applications, Samsung Pay is not limited to contactless payments . In this case, the phone will also be used to pay at terminals that support magnetic payment cards. In Poland, this solution is less and less frequent, but in the Western countries and in the US it is still the leading method of payment.
Is it worth using mobile applications?
A brief familiarization with each application should give us the first signs about which of them is worth using and which you can let go for now. If we take into account security , then we can definitely put Apple Pay in the first place. It provides the most security systems, which, although they may extend the transaction by a second or two, will not allow the release of funds from the bank account by someone who should not have access to it.When it comes to the possibilities and technology used, Samsung Pay is definitely winning, which is not limited to contactless payments. However, due to the fact that it is not available in Poland, it is hard to consider him as a winner. Therefore, in this competition we can conclude a tie between Apple and Google. At the end, the application remains available to us. Let's not hide that Apple devices are not the cheapest and iOS users are less than Android users, so the latter has a definite advantage. If somebody would like to use mobile payments now, they can do it boldly. It is certainly a good solution and safer. The fact that this is a fairly new solution should only encourage us, because from the part of manufacturers we can certainly expect a lot of new improvements.
