Housing and appearance: metal vs glass. It's basically the biggest differences
Both of these smartphones were made in a similar, though not identical, style. In fact, the most important difference in their case is the material used for the production of the rear panel. In addition, there are several other, less-obvious details. Rear panel Honor Play is made of metal covered with a pleasant to touch paint that makes the surface perfectly smooth. The producer should be a plus for phenomenal incorporation of antenna strips, which are not at all conspicuous. They are arranged in the letter U and placed on the top and bottom edges. In the Huawei Nova 3 we get a glass back panel , which in my case is a gradient. It can not be denied that Nova 3 looks very cool in blue – violet colors, but in terms of maintaining cleanliness, then Honor Play performs better, because metal is definitely less susceptible to dirt. Nevertheless, I do not know myself which panel appeals to me more – both just look great. Huawei Nova 3 and Honor Play received round biometric sensors, which were located on the back wall . In both models they are at the right height, therefore unlocking the smartphone with the use of this biometric security is not a problem. Before going any further, pay attention to one detail – on the back of the Huawei Nova 3, next to the islet with the lenses of the main cameras, the producer also added information about lens apertures , which we will not be able to witness in the Honor of Play. It means only one thing – Huawei came to the conclusion that in the case of Honora Play, there is nothing to brag about. In the front panel, you can distinguish these models without any problem, although they were maintained in a similar style. The most important thing, however, is that the bottom frame in the Horze Play received a logo, and it is also slightly thicker, which can be seen in our pictures. In addition, there is a different speaker grill and its shape, and also an additional camera lens is present in the Huawei Nova 3. The layout of the elements on the housing is standard on both models – on the right side there is a switch and a volume control bar above it. They are placed at the appropriate height, so you do not have to move the smartphone in your hands to increase the volume. The power button in the Huawei Nova 3, however, received a slightly different texture . The tray with the hybrid SIM card slot is on the left side, and the secondary microphone on the top frame. The lower edge was occupied by a microphone, a USB type C port, a multimedia speaker and a 3.5 mm mini-jack connector. So how could you read and also see, between these models there are no visible differences at first glance, apart from the material used for the production of the housing.
Battery life: both last the same
During everyday use, both smartphones present a similar level – this is due to the use of batteries with the same, optimal capacity (3750 mAh). The batteries in both phones provide up to two days of operation with the device away from the socket, with the display turned on for approximately five hours. If you decide to use almost all day WiFi, you can count on an additional hour on the screen, assuming that the management of the backlight is automatically adjusted by the existing light sensor. Compared to the competition, tested smartphones do not stand out in this category. [test slug = "battery" virtual = "loading-ac" order = "asc" selected = "22710,22700" type = "single" product_id = "22710,22722"] Both devices have a Battery Manager that allows you to use from several energy saving scenarios. In the most restrictive mode, the functionality of smartphones is very limited. There is also an option to save energy by activating a lower screen resolution – in this case it is HD + (1440 x 720 pixels). The batteries have support for fast charging using the 18-watt mains charger (9V / 2A) attached to the sales set. It's a very good tandem. Energy recovery is almost the same – the difference is just three minutes in favor of Huawei Nova 3.
Screen: evident tie
Both models use a 19.5: 9 display, which is characterized by a diagonal of 6.3 "and a FullHD + resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. With this characteristic, the panel made in IPS technology has a density of dots per inch at the level of about 409, which is a value suitable for comfortable consumption of content. There is no question of ragged fonts and blurry images. Therefore, in the case of Huawei Nova 3 and Honora Play, you can talk about very good readability and high comfort of use – these panels are suitable for browsing the Internet, as well as for playing or watching movies. They are simply universal .
|Honor Play||Huawei Nova 3|
|Resolution||FHD + (2340 x 1080 pixels pixels)|
|Accessories||blue light filter, color adjustment|
The strong point of the panels is maximum brightness, although the difference between them is almost invisible. In addition, both have the same minimum value of backlight, which is why you can comfortably use your smartphone after dark . In addition, in the settings you can use the reduction of blue light by adjusting the saturation of yellow. [test slug = "test-colors" order = "desc" selected = "22710,22722" virtual = "kolor-adobergb" type = "single" product_id = "22710,22722"] [test slug = "test-colors" order = "desc" selected = "22710,22722" virtual = "kolor-srgb" type = "single" product_id = "22710,22722"] [test slug = "screen-battery" virtual = "TEST_JASNOSC_AKU" order = "desc "selected =" 22710,22722 "type =" single "product_id =" 22710,22722 "] Display in the Honor of Play occupies 83% of the front panel , which is a very good result, although one must bear in mind that the matrix in Huawei Nova 3 takes ~ 84%. These differences show that the Huawei smartphone received narrower frames.Displays are only of good quality, having in mind above all the reproduction of colors – in the AdobeRGB palette it is 66.4% in the case of Honora Play, and in the Huawei Nova 3 our calibrator has a score of 66.8%. Coverage of sRGB scale colors reaches 90.6% and 91.2% in Huawei Nova 3, while DCI P3 Honor Play has 75.3% and Huawei 76%. In this respect, both models are much worse than the flagship Huawei P20 and much closer to Honora 7X. Thus, it can be seen that on this component the producer wanted to save a bit.
Cameras with double lenses
Both smartphones are equipped with dual lens cameras . However, they differ not only in the amount of megapixels.The main camera in the Play Halo has 16MP , and the lens has a brightness of F / 2.2. The equipment is also equipped with an LED lighting diode. There was also a rapid focus measurement (PDAF) and electronic image stabilization (EIS). The additional lens is a 2-megapixel sensor with f / 2.4 light. Thanks to the artificial intelligence of the NPU, Honor Play identifies 22 categories and analyzes over 500 scenes in real time. The smartphone is able to recognize and correct various parts of the body when taking pictures.
|Honor Play||Huawei Nova 3|
|The main camera||16MP||24MP (monochrome)|
|Lens aperture||F / 2.2||F / 1.8|
|Additional camera||2MP||16MP (RGB)|
|Lens aperture||F / 2.4||F / 1.8|
|Video||4K at 30 frames per second|
Huawei in Nova 3 put on a double camera. One has a resolution of 24 MP (monochrome) and the other 16 MP (RGB) . What is important is, inter alia, autofocus that allows you to quickly sharpen the frame. There is also a hybrid zoom that allows you to zoom in on the subject twice. The hybrid zoom consists in switching between lenses with different focal lengths.
Sample pictures of Huawei Nova 3
Sample pictures of Honor Play
-> See full-resolution sample images In the case of both smartphones, photographs taken in favorable lighting conditions are characterized by due detail . This is due to the good working of the automatic mode, which skilfully manages white balance, contrast, as well as sharpness. As you probably noticed in the example pictures, Honor Play has more vivid colors, and that means that the producer has interfered with the software too much. Interesting things happen after dark, because Huawei Nova 3 should ideally fall out, in which a brighter lens is present, albeit with more pixels, which is not a good connection. And that's because Huawei Nova 3 is not noticeably better at shooting in worse lighting conditions. I'm not saying that Honor play is better. In fact, she promised her grandmother for two and that's the best thing about it . There is simply no win in this category. On both smartphones, movies can be recorded in a maximum 4K resolution. Of course, it is also possible to record recordings in FHD resolution at 60 frames per second and in slow motion. Huawei Nova 3, however, has a better camera application, because it is more functional and even offers black and white or 3D Emoji.However, there is something that distinguishes these two devices in terms of photographic possibilities – Selfie cameras. In the case of the Huawei Nova 3 you can count on portraits with the bokeh effect and artificial intelligence algorithms. This is of course due to the additional 2MP lens that works with the 24MP camera. However, when you decide to purchase Honora Play, you can count on self-portraits with a 16MP camera with F / 2.0 light, and therefore with optics of decent brightness. For Selfie lovers, Huawei Nova 3 may be a better choice , although Honor Play is also a good proposition and I would not cross it out of the list. Behind Huawei, however, speaks first of all the possibility of blurring the background with an additional lens.
Efficiency: in both models at the same level
Both smartphones have been put on the same set responsible for performance, which is why HiSilicon Kirin 970 is responsible for the operation, and so the SoC system produced in the 10 nm lithographic process, same as Snapdragon 845. The Kirin 970 consists of eight (64-bit) cores – 4x ARM Cortex-A73@2.36GHz + 4x ARM Cortex-A53@1.8GHz, an i7 co-processor and the ARI Mali-G72MP12 graphics chip. Added to this is the support of a 4-gigabyte RAM RAM type LPDDR4. [test slug = "android-antutu-7" order = "desc" selected = "22710,22722" virtual = "antutu-total-7" type = "single" product_id = "22710,22722"] [test slug = " geekbench-4 "order =" desc "selected =" 22710,22722 "virtual =" geekbench-4-Single-Core "type =" single "product_id =" 22710,22722 "] [test slug =" geekbench-4 "order = "desc" selected = "22710,22722" virtual = "geekbench-4-Multi-Core" type = "single" product_id = "22710,22722"] We get a decent and tested set . One that translates into an appropriate work culture. During everyday use, I did not encounter slowdowns or downtimes. The system (Google Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.2) remained stable even during a longer load – like playing games and opening many applications. Added to this is the management of RAM , so switching between open processes is fast enough. I did not have problems when working on two windows. Optimization of these components is at a high level, but it is not surprising – it is not the first Huawei smartphone with such a set. Huawei Nova 3, however, has more memory for user data , which is 128 GB.
Honor Play or Huawei Nova 3? What to choose?
Despite the large difference in price between these two smartphones, in comparison you can not see what you really need to pay extra . Of course, Huawei Nova 3 has better cameras on paper, or more memory for user data, but the main components are identical in both models.Of course, Huawei Nova 3 has a slightly better camera, although the difference in detail, relative to Honora Play, is not so visible. Everything really depends on what photos you prefer – more natural or with conquered colors. At night, less noise is usually found in the Huawei Nova 3, but Honor Play also positively surprises, so the choice is not so simple. Thus, it turns out that the main factor that distinguishes Honor Play and Huawei Nova 3 is the material used to manufacture the housing . Design, however, is a matter of taste, so you have to decide for yourself whether you want to pay 500 zlotys for a gradient housing made of glass, or you choose metal and you buy a nice gadget or money for the household budget.
