We talk with Kuba Pancewicz, GM Poland & SEE Motorola Mobility about the future of Motorola, prices of smartphones, updates, notch and 5G technology.
Szymon Marcjanek, gsmManiaK.pl : For many years you have been associated with Nokia, now you are the head of Polish Motorola. There was a time when both of these companies enjoyed the status of a legend in Poland. However, as Nokia's return has shown, sentiment is not everything. Do you believe that it will be possible to restore Motorola's former fame in Poland? Kuba Pancewicz, GM Poland & SEE Motorola Mobility : The medium and the older generation remember about these legendary and pioneering brands and their products. For younger customers, we are a new brand and this is very good news for us because in Motorola we are and feel like a start-up, which is just entering the market and building its market position from scratch. Start-up, although Motorola is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. We are guided by the philosophy of "Different is Better" ( "Otherwise is better"). It is a strategy that is appreciated by customers. I am convinced that we have all the attributes needed to win the hearts of customers, and what to build the Motorola brand from scratch. Each region has its own specificity and a different rate of development. What do you think is the strength of the Polish market? The Polish smartphones market, in the European context, is on the one hand one of the largest markets in terms of quantity, and on the other hand it is still a market with a much lower average price of purchased smartphones. This combination plus fast growing consumption is a big potential for growth, above all the market value. You have been observing the smartphone market for many years and you have certainly noticed that the prices of flagship, top phones are growing at a rapid pace. Ceiling 2,5 thousand PLN, which we once thought was high, today seems ridiculously low in terms of the latest proposals from Samsung or Apple. On the other hand, we have Xiaomi, which openly declares that it does not plan to exceed the limit of 700 dollars for the phone. It seems that Motorola wants to follow a similar path, because a significant part of your offer is today the average shelf. You believe that you can build a premium product for up to 2 thousand. zł? Yes, the prices of the most expensive smartphones have increased in recent years, but you have to remember that most customers choose cheaper phones. With our portfolio, we fit perfectly with the expectations of Polish consumers and offer smartphones from the "medium shelf" in the range from 700 to 1300 zlotys, which is more than half of the market. We also have a product at a higher price, moto with 3 play, which can be bought for less than 2 thousand. zł. It's a smartphone that basically has everything that the most expensive smartphones have. Large transparent Amoled display, beautiful design in a slim design, configuration that provides the right performance for everyone. Fast charging and cameras that perform well in all lighting conditions. Do not forget that it is a smartphone from the z series, so you can expand its possibilities thanks to "Mods". One of the largest phone manufacturers has recently been caught on artificially knocking the performance of their smartphones in benchmarks. The company explained that it is a common practice – even a necessity today. What do you think about such practices? Each company is responsible for its actions and does not want to comment on what the competition is doing and saying. At Motorola we run a business and inform clients honestly and honestly. We believe in our solutions and the path we follow – customers appreciate it. The Polish smartphone market today is primarily Samsung and Huawei. Motorola ranks far behind with a one-digit result in the latest IDC report. In previous interviews, you mentioned that you are facing a difficult goal – to significantly improve Motorola's results in Poland and jump into the top three. How do you want to do this? We focus primarily on products from the so-called middle price range. We focus on modernity and high quality at a good price. The theme of the G series is the "Cards for all" ( "Premium for all"), or engineering solutions, components, materials and product functionality from the "top shelf" for a reasonable price. That's what Polish consumers demand and that's what Motorola takes care of. An example of this approach is motorola g6 for PLN 999. At this price, the customer buys a product that has most of the functions of the "flagship" smartphone. The phone is equipped with a large, widescreen display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9, has 3 very good cameras and a solid battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh, which is enough for the entire day of use. The whole is modern designed and made of very good materials, such as metal and glass. In the middle of pure Android 8.0 with super comfortable and helpful Moto Gestures. It's the perfect combination at an attractive price. We talked about the average shelf, and what about the cheapest phone segment? Is it possible to buy a good Motorola phone for 500 PLN? The cheapest phone segment is important for our customers, so it is also very important to us. We want customers who are looking for a phone for PLN 500 to purchase a nice and modern smartphone for this price. We direct our e-series to such people, in particular Motorola e⁵ and Motorola e⁵ play. Once Motorola has created a cult phone with a flip. Today, he invests in Moto Mods and modular architecture, but the interest in new technology seems rather cautious. Do you have an idea how to change it? Like any innovation, Moto Mods needs time to become a universal solution. It is important to make consumers aware of the possibilities offered by such modular architecture and, above all, to show these solutions in practice. Thanks to Moto Mods, the user extends the functions of his smartphone from the moto family to when it is needed. These are options that standard smartphones do not offer. Do we need to change our phone into a portable gaming console? It's very simple thanks to the Gamepad module. We want to enrich your smartphone with perfect stereo sound? Just reach for JBL Soundboost. There are so many of them in the 'Mods' portfolio that everyone will find something for themselves. The huge advantage of Moto Mods is also their connection – this is done in a very simple and reliable way, through a magnetic connector. Modules also enable us to innovate faster and cheaper. The 5G technology is getting louder and louder. In a few months you will show your first smartphone supporting this standard. Is the world ready for it? Motorola z3 together with the 5G module will be the first smartphone in the world that enables connectivity in this technology. According to many analysts, 5G smartphones after entering the market cost over 1000 euros, while our solution will be offered at a decidedly lower price. Is the world ready for it? I think that today we can not imagine changes in our lives caused by personal broadband internet in our pocket. Time will show what innovations will be held permanently. For many of our readers, regular software updates are important enough to be a decisive factor in the selection of a given brand's phone. I am sure you are collecting your statistics on this issue: do you think that a Polish user can not live without an update? There is a group of conscious clients for whom software updates, especially those improving security, are very important. However, for most smartphone users, this is not as important and they often do not install updates at all. iPhone X spread fashion to a controversial indent in the screen, i.e. notch. As the premiere of the last smartphone One showed, the new trend also did not bypass Motorola. This transitional fashion will not stay with Moto for longer? Notch is, of course, a way to maximally "fill" the front screen of your smartphone. In my opinion, this trend will continue and producers will look for solutions that let notch be as small as possible. An alternative is different mechanical solutions, retractable cameras, sensors, etc., and these are usually more expensive and add weight and size to your smartphone. Since we are at the premiere of Motorola One – what about the Power model? He will go to Poland, has not this decision been decided yet? Motorola One Power is intended for the Indian market and we do not plan to introduce this model in Europe. Flattening the housing, narrowing frames and optimizing the size of displays is the present. What do you think is waiting for us in the near future? Where do you see the greatest potential for another innovation and breakthrough that will change today's smartphones forever? In innovation, the most beautiful is that we do not know where the limits are and thus we do not know what awaits us in a moment. Trends today include flexible displays, voice interface and artificial intelligence (AI). 5G technology with huge transmission speeds and minimal delays creates completely new possibilities, especially in the context of AI. Thanks to 5G, the user will be able to use more and more computing power, data repositories in the cloud and less and less will depend on the parameters of his own smartphone. This in combination with IoT gives completely new possibilities for creative people. Thank you for the conversation.
