It's time for a review of the Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1, the first smartphone of the new Xiaomi sub-brand, which is sensational in Poland. Is POCOPHONE F1 so good that it is not worth paying extra to any other, more expensive model with a similar specification? You will find the answer in the POCOPHONE F1 test.
Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 , also known as POCO F1, is the hit sales stuff. For less than PLN 1,500 we get equipment with top Snapdragon, a lot of internal and internal memory, a double camera with a very good sensor and a 4000 mAh battery. Many users will also be happy about the large screen with relatively narrow frames. We do not have too many smartphones on the market that offer so much on paper for so little. The only question is whether the remarkably low price did not sometimes come from blatant savings, and hence, is it definitely worth buying this phone? We decided to check it – this is our review of POCO F1 .
Plastic housing. Hit or putty?
A few years ago, smartphones with plastic housings were everyday, even if they cost several thousand zlotys. More or less since 2014, fashion has begun on more noble materials such as metal and glass. Now it is glass that took the dominant position on the market, which to be honest on average I like, because the risk of total damage to the phone is greater than ever before.Submarka Xiaomi noticed that many mania do not like glass in smartphones, that's why the POCOPHONE F1 housing was made of plastic (although for me it is primarily looking for savings). It is a good quality material that gives a lasting impression and is even quite pleasant to touch. All elements have been well folded. It is a pity that Xiaomi did not follow the blow, giving the possibility of a free battery replacement, because in this way, POCO F1 would win the hearts of some of our readers;) The appearance of the tested model does not make much of an impression on me. A screen with a note and a fairly large beam under it works on me like a cloth for a bull, but luckily I have not copied even though the arrangement of a double camera on the back panel. It is located vertically in the center of the rear panel, and under the fingerprint reader. When it comes to the placement of other elements, the 3.5 mm jack connector is located on the upper edge, and the lower speaker, USB type C and microphone. The left edge has a slot for two SIM cards / SIM card and a memory card, and the volume and switch buttons are on the other side. All keys have a good pitch and are put in the right place. At the very end of this section I have three comments. First of all, despite the really big screen (about which more in a moment), the Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 is in the palm of your hand and I was able to use it with only one hand. Second, the notification LED is hidden in the bar below the display, just above the charging port. Third, the last glass on the front is Gorilla Glass 3, after which the finger slides very nicely, but leaves streaks – the oleophobic coating could be better.
Good screen and nothing more
Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 received a screen with a diagonal of 6.18 inches , Full HD + resolution (2246×1080) and 18.7: 9 proportions, which was made in IPS technology. The density of pixels per inch is 403 PPI, so the sharpness of the displayed image is very good and works well in everyday applications. In the upper part of the panel we find a lot of notes , which is as hopeless as the one in Xiaomi Mi 8. This means more or less that POCOPHONE F1 still does not support face recognition using infrared, and does not display any application notifications. It's good that Xiaomi has improved his masking a little , thanks to which the dark strip now almost completely merges with the notch. It is a pity that in the upper part of the screen we get a straight line, while in the lower part of the screen the arches are quite deep, so there is no symmetry. [wptab style = "4" title = "Maximum brightness"] [test slug = "screen-battery" virtual = "TEST_JASE_PASS" order = "desc" selected = "22700" type = "single" product_id = "22614,22604, 22590.22588,22582,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Minimum brightness "] [ test slug = "screen-battery" virtual = "TEST_JASNOSC_AKU_MIN" order = "asc" selected = "22700" type = "single" product_id = "22614,22604,22590,22588,22582,22,2254,28,21516,22382,22472,22222 , 22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" sRGB "] [test slug =" test-colors "order =" desc "selected =" 22700 "virtual =" color-srgb "type =" single "product_id =" 22614,22604,22590,22588,22582,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] Since I was already mad at notch , now I will discuss the remaining parameters of the POCO F1 screen. The maximum brightness slightly exceeds the value of 460 cd / m2 , which gives us good visibility in the sun, although there is no question of full comfort of service, and all this for a little too high level of reflections. The level of minimal backlight is brilliant, because 2 cd / m2 provide full comfort for the eyes during the night reading. The blue light filter is an additional aid. The contrast is typical for the average IPS panel, and the color reproduction stands at a decent level – 97% coverage of the sRGB palette in standard mode is a good result. If someone is looking for more curled colors, he should switch to the Increased contrast setting, and the Auto contrast mode adjusts the parameters to the lighting conditions. In general, the POCOPHONE F1 screen is quite good in this class, but it definitely does not go crazy. Everything would be fine if my test copy did not have a backlight leak in the lower part of the display , visible primarily when displaying clear content. I suspect that this is just an individual case , because I have not heard mass complaints about similar problems. I recommend, however, take a closer look at the bottom part of the screen when buying POCO F1.
When it comes to components, in new smartphones, for around 1500 PLN, we usually get a solid, medium-sized system of the Snapdragon 636 habit (although there are much weaker units), with a maximum of 4 GB RAM and eMMC memory. It's a powerful enough configuration for the phone to work briskly and seamlessly, but anyway, the year's older flagships remain noticeably stronger. In the case of the POCOPHONE F1 it is completely different, because it is driven by the top Snapdragon 845 , connected to the Adreno 630 graphics system, 6 GB RAM type LPDDR4X and fast memory UFS 2.1, in the case of the tested unit with a capacity of 64 GB. In Polish stores, we will not buy a smartphone with equally strong components for similar money. The only sensible competitors are the older flagships and Honor Play. Powerful POCO F1 goggles make the smartphone record high benchmark results: [wptab style = "4" title = "AnTuTu 7"] [test slug = "android-antutu-7" order = "desc" selected = "22700" virtual = "antutu-total-7" type = "single" product_id = "22614,22604,22590,22588,22582,22548,22318,22650,22692,22700"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = "4" title = "PC Mark"] [test slug = "pcmark-android" order = "desc" selected = "22700" virtual = "pcmark-android-work" type = "single" product_id = "22614,22604,22590,22588,22582 , 22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" GeekBench Single "] [test slug =" geekbench -4 "order =" desc "selected =" 22700 "virtual =" geekbench-4-Single-Core "type =" single "product_id =" 22614,22604,22590,22588,22582,2254,28,22516,22382,22472, 22222,22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" GeekBench Multi "] [test slug =" geekbench-4 "order =" desc "selected = "22700" virtual = "geekbench-4-Multi-Core" type = "single" product_id = "22614 , 22604,22590,22588,22582,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] In every test of the processor, or testing the overall efficiency , The POCOPHONE F1 is in a very high position, slightly ahead of other models with similar components, and few times losing. This smartphone is a performance demon, and most importantly, it can be seen in everyday applications. The first Xiaomi submarine smartphone works like lightning . The pace of launching individual programs is almost unearthly, just like the flow of animation or reaction to any commands. Even faster applications are restored from RAM. In terms of work culture and performance, POCO F1 should satisfy even the most demanding user. Full HD + resolution is not a special challenge for Adreno 630, which handles seamlessly with virtually any game from the Google Play store . Probably only completely unoptimized titles can be a challenge for this smartphone, but fortunately there are not too many of them. A few moments should be devoted to the cooling system , which boasts POCO. It is supposed to prevent the loss of performance under load and it satisfies it satisfactorily, but it is difficult to talk about any revolution. During long-term operations, the Xiaomi POCOPHONE loses up to 20% of the processor's power and about 15% of the power of the graphics chip. I know a few phones that perform worse, but I also know a few that are similar, or even better. Practically the same behavior is observed, among others Xiaomi Mi 8, which does not have such advanced cooling. The casing itself usually heats up only slightly and only during long-term tests it becomes noticeably warmer, but I do not see any reasons to worry.
The battery impresses
The battery in the POCOPHONE F1 has a capacity of 4000 mAh , and this is a very good value for such a phone. Currently, most of the equipment with large screens and powerful processors has clearly smaller batteries, so the first child POCO deserves the plus. Of course, I would not admit it, if the capacity did not go working time on one charge, and this one is simply delightful . [wptab style = "4" title = "Normal use"] [slug test = "battery" order = "desc" selected = "22700" virtual = "pcmark-work-2" type = "single" product_id = "22614, 22604,22590,22588,22582,22548,225254,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Games "] [test slug = "battery" order = "desc" selected = "22700" virtual = "battery-manhattan-3" type = "single" product_id = "22614,22604,22590,22588,22582,2254,288,22516,22382,22472,22222, 22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Charging time "] [test slug =" battery "virtual =" loading-ac "order =" asc "selected =" 22700 "type =" single "product_id =" 22614,22604,22590,22588,22582,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512,22650,22692,22700 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] Testing POCOPHONE F1, I managed to achieve a full working day, i.e. from early morning to late evening , with about 25% energy reserve. In my hands, few phones allow it, because the vast majority loads every day. The average SoT for the LTE network is 5h, while when using only the Wi-Fi network, I managed to dial 6.5 or even 9 hours on the screen , depending on how much advanced operations I did. With such a strong hardware configuration it's really very good results. To complete the missing energy, you need about 106 minutes of connecting your smartphone to a charger that supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology. That's what we get in the set. It's nice that Xiaomi was not looking for such brazen savings (greetings to Apple!).
Camera – very good during the day, average at night
Now even cheap phones get a double camera , so it should not surprise anyone that it just got POCOPHONE F1. Here we get the configuration of 12 MP + 5 MP . The additional unit is intended to help recognize depth, while the main unit is based on the IMX363 sensor and has f / 1.9 light and 1.4μm pixels. For the measurement of focus, the Dual Pixel AF technology is used. Unfortunately, the camera is not optically stabilized .The application for camera operation is practically the same as in other Xiaomi phones from the upper shelf, so I will send it for review to the Xiaomi Mi 8 review. Here I will focus on the quality of photos, and this depends on the amount of light in the frame. >>> SEE PHOTOS IN FULL RESOLUTION In good lighting conditions, which takes into account both the middle of the day and the early morning / evening, POCOPHONE F1 records nice photos , which can boast of a good number of recorded details, a solid tonal range and well-reproduced colors. Only after approximation you can see that details in the background could be more, but this is not a big problem. Focusing is really fast and almost always flawless, although the sharpness in the frame corners is not always perfect. In short, the level is good and the POCOPHONE F1 takes photos better than last year's Xiaomi Mi 6 and not much worse than the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. The situation changes to a minus when the lights are missing. POCOPHONE F1 sets almost identical exposure and ISO times, like Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S or Xiaomi Mi 8, but due to the lack of optical image stabilization it is difficult to make an immobile photo under such conditions . I recommend holding POCO F1 firmly and steadily during night pics to achieve bearable effects , somewhere on the level of the already mentioned Xiaomi Mi 6. POCOPHONE therefore does not start for the best photosmartphones, but new, similarly priced phones are not better in this respect. We will record video content in 4K, Full HD and HD resolutions . Xiaomi still did not add any recording in 60 fps, so in each case we get 30 fps. You can also choose slow motion, maximum Full HD in 240 fps, and one of two compression standards – H.264 or H.265. The quality of the films is similar to the quality of the photos and depends on the lighting conditions. In good light, we can count on detailed and smooth clips , while after darkness the liquidity drops, and the details are definitely less. It's good that digital image stabilization works fine. It would be nice if the recorded sound was less metallic. The selfie camera has 20 MP and autofocus . The self-pores they generate are simply very good. You can only attach to slightly too pale colors, but this can easily be improved in any graphics program. I would like to add that the camera application supports beautifying, also at an advanced level, which means the possibility of correcting the chin, nose, eyes etc. separately.
Equipment – NFC is missing for luck
At the very beginning of this section I have to mention the biggest imperfection of Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 – no NFC . This means that we will not pay for this shopping with this smartphone. Xiaomi should learn that if he wants to sell his goods in Europe, he should add a relatively important NFC – many other manufacturers can do it, even when Chinese model prototypes do not have this form of proximity communication. Other equipment is a good standard. GPS, Bluetooth 5, FM radio, gyroscope, light sensor, proximity sensor, dual band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and Wi-Fi Direct – all this is and works without any problems. I am particularly happy about the good Wi-Fi range , with which even the Galaxy Note 9 fares a bit worse.Supporters of type C USB will be happy with the POCOPHONE F1, because it offers this connector. What's more, in contrast to the last flagship Xiaomi, there was room for 3.5 mm jack headphone output . Nevertheless, the quality of sound is not very exciting – the tested model plays enough and enough. I can say the same about two multimedia speakers (the function of one of them is the speaker of conversations). In terms of music, POCO F1 does not stand anything special, but the average user should be satisfied. The jack connector is not the only thing that distinguishes the first POCO model from the Xiaomi flagship. POCOPHONE F1 has a microSD card slot, so we can expand the memory for files . I have not seen anywhere the maximum capacity of the cards supported by my phone, but 128 GB worked without any problem. The built-in memory gets 64 GB, of which only 53 GB are realistically available. The fingerprint reader can be found on the rear panel of the POCOPHONE F1. It works as it should, quickly and precisely unlocking the phone . As already mentioned, the smartphone theoretically supports unlocking the face, but not on the software in the Global version (at least for now). At the end, two words about telephone functions. By the supporter of the hybrid Dual SIM, the POCOPHONE F1 talks quite nicely, because the sound of our and the caller's voices is clear and loud enough. I also did not notice that the equipment had a range problem, both during calls and network connectivity (including LTE in the 800 MHz band). The modem used supports aggregation of bands – in the end we deal with cat. 18.
System. What is MIUI for POCO?
POCOPHONE F1 works under the control of Android 8.1 Oreo, which has been heavily modified by Xiaomi through the MIUI overlay for POCO . In many aspects, it is very similar to the software we find in Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and Xiaomi Mi 8, so I will focus here on the differences. Cover in POCOPHONE F1 has a drawer with applications that can be triggered by a gesture of pulling up from the bottom of the screen. Programs are listed vertically, alphabetically or arbitrarily, depending on our preferences. Xiaomi has added an option that allows you to divide them into categories (tools, photography or cracking – original spelling). At the very top there are applications that we use most often, but it can also be turned off, and in the bottom part we have a search engine. The switches on the notification bar remind you of pure Android, not MIUI. The difference can also be seen in the icons and font, and on board there is also a dedicated POCO motif. Besides, I do not see any great differences between the usual MIUI 9.6 and MIUI 9.6 for POCO. This means that in the software you will find many tools to control the phone itself and individual applications, and you can navigate through the interface using gestures and standard Android function buttons.
Summary and evaluation
Advantages and disadvantages of POCOPHONE F1
Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 is a great phone at a tempting price – more or less such opinions dominate the "Polish Internet". They are hardly surprising, because at the average price we get equipment with top components, which are mainly associated with twice as expensive phones. Only is a powerful processor and a good amount of memory all that the POCOPHONE F1 tempt? Powerful parameters make the smartphone I am talking about is a performance demon , which quickly performs all the commands entrusted to it, and in addition it is alien to the concept of cutting animation and silting up . Those people who put the culture of work first, should be delighted with the possibilities of POCOPHONE F1.The power of the components is not everything – the battery is also powerful. I sincerely doubt that any POCO F1 user would have to look for a charger in the middle of the day, and many users will probably forget about it even for two days. On the plus side, I also include the photographic possibilities of this equipment , although this applies mainly to good or at least medium-sized lighting conditions. It is comforting that the POCOPHONE F1 is one of the best photosmartphones in its class anyway, when we take into account new phones for about 1500 zlotys. Whoever could not afford the lack of a 3.5 mm jack connector and memory card slot in the Xiaomi flagship, the one in POCO F1 will find something for himself. On the other hand, this smartphone does not have NFC , which for many mania can prove to be a more disqualifying factor than the absenteeism of the two elements mentioned above. Everything really depends on our preferences. Likewise, it will probably be with the assessment of the plastic housing – for me it is neutral. A gentle disappointment is the screen , which generally deserves a good note, but the best panels on the market do not even have a start. It would be useful to have a higher maximum brightness or at least additional anti-reflection coatings to make the visibility in full sun better. I am personally more nervous but little practical notch through which Xiaomi POCOPHONE F1 does not display any notification application without the download notification bar.
Is it worth buying a POCOPHONE F1?
Considering all the pros and cons, I think that POCOPHONE F1 is a phone worth recommending . If the lack of NFC and plastic housing do not bother you, and the efficiency and time of work on one charge is the main priority, then POCO F1 will be a brilliant choice for PLN 1,500 .[show_rating]
