The fight for the indestructible screen continues and it looks like we have the first winner. OPPO is to launch the first smartphone from Gorilla Glass 6. Will the Chinese manufacturer not lose on this?
Two weeks ago Corning revealed to the world a handful of information about their latest product – Gorilla Glass 6. The fifth generation of the most popular smartphone glass is expected to be twice as resistant to falls. In tests Gorilla Glass 6 withstood 15 serious falls from a height of 1 m and promises to be the most perfect glass in history . Let us, however, wait with this judgment. The structure of the new Gorilla Glass 6 has been chemically enhanced, and in addition Corning claims to have discovered a "completely new" material and that's what the latest glass edition was made of. Completely new material sounds promising, but raises some concerns.
Gorilla Glass 6 not so strong?
The use of incompletely tested material may prove dangerous and despite the initial tests, the glass may behave quite differently after several months.Tests are very different from real falls, and despite all Corning's reliability, it's unclear how glass will cope in reality . The previous generation of Gorilla Glass 5 in most cases met the expectations of customers, but one of the misses of OnePlus 6 seemed very worrying. The above situation with OnePlus is not entirely the fault of Gorilla Glass 5 , which is covered with a telephone front and rear, but may be due to stresses inside the case. This shows, however, that Gorilla Glass 6 will also be subjected to similar effects and it is not known how to deal with them.
OPPO is risking a lot
OPPO chose the risky move – the manufacturer will use Gorilla Glass 6 in F9, F9 Pro and R17 . The F9 pro flagship has recently been revealed with a note and super-fast VOOC charging function. Now he will also receive the latest glass coating. The OPPO F series is the main division of the company's medium- half – company, while the OPPO R series is the upper-middle or pseudophagous class of smartphones. John Bayne, vice president and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass, commented on the upcoming cooperation with OPPO:
We are excited to put the Gorilla Glass 6 through OPPO. The new flagship OPPO model will provide […] consumers with increased protection against multiple falls. "
The OPPO vice president, Andy Wu, is also full of hope for a new solution. What will the results be? With them, we have to wait for independent testers. Source: xda-developers.com
