What should be the ideal average in 2018? What components should it have? What should we expect from the camera, screen or housing? I would like to introduce my vision of the ideal mid-range smartphone, asking you for the same.
In the network you can find a lot of different entries, in which the authors present their vision of an ideal smartphone . In the vast majority of cases, if not all, it is a top-class top model, which is commonly called a flagship. I once saw sense in such entries, because until recently, only flagships were without any problems. The medium shelf was very average, and the cheapest devices had to be avoided with a wide arc if you did not want to get a neurosis. Fortunately, times change and even smartphones for a few shortcuts work quite well (especially in the direction of Xiaomi), and the average people are a real, cheaper alternative to more expensive flagships. So I came to the conclusion that this is the high time to create an "ideal medium" . Of course, everything I write below will be my private list of expectations for such a phone. I am asking you to share your vision of the ideal mid-range smartphone .
I will start with the part of the specification which for many mania is very important, and sometimes even the most important: of course, it's about components .As a smartphone tester, I have the opportunity to check the performance of many different central units. Thanks to this, I know that the performance of a good average should correspond to the SoC on the possibilities between Snadpragon 625 and Snapdragonen 660 . These do not necessarily have to be Qualcomm units, although I personally prefer them. At the moment, the best compromise seems Snapdragon 636 , which we find in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. With 8 Kryo 260 cores clocked up to 1.8 GHz, Snapdragon 636 is up to 40% faster than Snapdragon 630. The graphics are Adreno 509, stronger than Adreno 508 by about 10%. SoC supports all modern communication standards: Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, GPS with GLONASS (+ Beidou and Galileo) or aptX and aptX HD. The whole was made in a 14nm technological process. A great combination of performance and energy efficiency. For this I would add 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory . I am sure that such a set would be enough for the vast majority of users.
What screen? What about frames?
I constantly change from one smartphone to another. I used to think that I prefer relatively small screens, then I found out about phablets, and now I use Xiaomi Mi 6 with a 5.15-inch display every day. After all these experiences, I notice that I am able to get used to almost every diagonal and I can use telephones with screens of 5 to 6 inches without much problem. I know that everyone has different preferences in this matter, so I will not show a specific value.I know, however, what parameters I expect from the screen of a good averageist. The colors must be mapped in the correct way (as the highest coverage of the sRGB color palette), the corresponding contrast (~ 1200: 1 is for IPS), and the black should not be gray. For this a wide range of brightness adjustment, so that the display does not hurt the eyes when the light is off and was readable even in the strong sun. The Full HD indicates the optimal resolution. Generally, I would prefer a screen type AMOLED , although IPS meeting my conditions would also be acceptable. Recently, the proportions of the screen and the size of the frames around it have become important. Generally, I do not mind 16: 9, 18: 9 or 16:10, so I would be able to adapt to any value. I would, however, avoid any cut-out in the screen . When it comes to frames, the LG Q6 seems to be the golden mean. I do not need more (or rather less), although I am still impressed by what Vivo APEX looks like.
A double camera with sense
A good average man should take good pictures – it's as bright as the sun. In this aspect, I have no intention of making me fancy, which is why I am counting primarily on optical image stabilization. I will focus on something more important: an additional camera. Have you noticed that a lot of mediums have a double camera, but the extra "eyelet" is usually used for background blurring and has a very low resolution? It's nothing more than art for art, or if you prefer to cool your matercodes . I would much prefer a manufacturer to create a medium wide angle . It used to be tempted by LG, but in the case of the LG X Cam, an additional camera was the only piece of equipment that somehow stood out, and this entry is after all something more.
What else do I expect from the perfect average?
My ideal average should still offer:
- a battery with a reasonable capacity, preferably (noticeably) more than 3000 mAh, with support for fast charging,
- the best metal housing,
- water tightness would be a welcome addition,
- the ability to record video in Full D at 60 fps (no 4K I can survive),
- solid communication facilities, with W-Fi ac, NFC and USB-C,
- 3.5 mm jack connector,
- active, efficient fingerprint reader,
- a fresh version of Android with the option of relatively regular updates.
How much could I pay for such a smartphone?
If any of the producers created the average of my dreams, how much would I be able to pay for it ?Money is a controversial topic, especially in the world of smartphones, which are getting more expensive. This applies not only to flaggers, but also to smartphones from the middle shelf. A perfect example is the Samsung Galaxy A8, which is a very decent model, but definitely too expensive (especially for the start, now is a bit better ). On the other hand, it's hard to expect smartphones to be given away half-free. That is why I decided to approach the whole matter wisely and I would be able to pay up to PLN 1,500 for a perfect medium-sized smartphone, with a conditional payment of a few zlotys, if I considered it appropriate. Of course, I would still be wondering if it would be better to look for some older flagship for similar money, but I would definitely consider buying an outstanding middleweight very seriously.
