The Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra is a 16: 9 large-screen phablet with a capacious battery, solid communication facilities and a dual selfie camera. Does the sum of the advantages and disadvantages of this model justify its price? I invite you to read the reviews of the Xperia XA2 Ultra.
Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra is offered on the Polish market at a price of 1799/1899 PLN . Currently, it is a standard price, as for average, which in some ways tries to pretend to be a flagship. Xperia XA2 Ultra is to tempt us with a large screen with a 16: 9 aspect ratio, a dual selfie camera (one of them even has an OIS!), A capacious battery and Android Oreo to start. Is it enough for the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra to be a success? Answers to this question (and all others) will provide our test phone Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra .
A bit of OmniBalance, a bit of Ambient Flow
For many years, Sony designed smartphones in the spirit of OmniBalance style, which it gave up this year, putting on Ambient Flow. It is true that the design was officially introduced in the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact models, but Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra already announced major changes. Let's start with the controversial frames that defined the Sony style. Contrary to appearances, those in XA2 Ultra are not as big as some people think . The ratio of filling the front with the screen corresponds more or less to what we get in the theoretically frameless Galaxy A8. The difference is that Samsung has put on a symmetrical frame around the display, while Sony reduced the side to a minimum, allowing itself to leave a bit more space above and below the screen. They are visually enlarged by a rectangular shape, so it may seem that the issues of spatial development of the Japanese clearly stand out from their rivals. This is not entirely true.Sony has gone crazy in a different aspect. Xperia XA2 Ultra is quite "plump" – the thickness is up to 9.5 mm ! This is partially compensated by the capacious battery that we will discuss later, as well as the gentle closing of the battery cover. This is where you can see the first signal announcing the change in the stylistics of Xperia smartphones. In addition, the phone itself is relatively heavy, as it weighs up to 221 g. The combination of these factors makes the use of Xperia XA2 Ultra can be cumbersome, if you are not a person used to devices with similar dimensions. What about the quality of workmanship? On the plus side the presence of Gorilla glass on the front, which effectively protected the screen from scratches, at least during my tests. I also like a solid and nice metal frame . We do not know why metal is not found on the back panel, which is plastic. Plastic is generally of good quality, but it is easy to get dirty and I feel that sooner or later it may scratch itself solidly. The arrangement of individual elements is typical, so there are no surprises. The switch, the volume keys and the shutter release button are found on the right edge. I have no objections either to their location or their work. 3.5 mm jack connectors need to be found on the bottom edge, and the type C USB port on the bottom of the phone.
A large screen with a 16: 9 aspect ratio
Screens 18: 9 are becoming more and more popular and now it is getting harder and harder to get a phone with a large display with 16: 9 proportions, to which some have become very attached. Xperia XA2 Ultra comes to help such people, whose 6-inch screen retains its old proportions and presents content in Full HD (1920×1080). The sharpness of the displayed image is therefore optimal for a typical user who does not use passionate VR goggles. Our measurements indicated a value of 602 cd / m2. This is only a little less than in the predecessor, which is of little importance, because visibility in a bright environment is first and foremost . The minimum brightness has been significantly improved, and now we are talking about 5 cd / m2. The comfort of reading at night is very high. I regret, however, that there is no blue light filter on the board, because the slider to change the color temperature only helps half, and the white in XA2 Ultra is cool (about 7500 K).The color reproduction itself is at a good level. The sRGB palette is covered in 93% , which is typical in this class of equipment. In the options we get two dedicated color modes. The standard puts on more natural, subdued colors, while the super-vivid raises them clearly, as in AMOLEDs of the old date. The contrast is more than okay, and the blacks do not seem gray. Perhaps the Xperia XA2 Ultra screen will not delight enthusiasts of perfect calibration, but people looking for a phone with a large and bright screen should be satisfied.
Above average battery life
Sony smartphones are usually associated with good battery life, even if the mounted battery does not knock your capacity down. In the case of Xperia XA2 Ultra it looks pretty good, because 3580 mAh is a good value, announcing decent performance. In practice, it is even better than the numbers predict. [wptab style = "4" title = "Normal use"] [test slug = "battery" order = "desc" selected = "22564" virtual = "pcmark-work" type = "single" product_id = "22412,22218, 22182,22516,22154,22500,22186,22166,22564 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Games "] [test slug =" battery "order =" desc "selected =" 22564 "virtual = "battery-manhattan-3" type = "single" product_id = "22412,22218,22182,22516,22154,22500,22186,22166,22564"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = "4" title = "Time loading "] [test slug =" battery "virtual =" loading-ac "order =" asc "selected =" 22564 "type =" single "product_id =" 22412,22218,22182,22516,22154,22500,22186,22166 , 22564 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] The Japanese mastered battery optimization to perfection. The Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra quietly withstands the whole long day of work on a single charge, and giving it some slack you can count on two days without meeting the socket . Depending on the level of use of different communication standards, the screen's working time ranges from 5.5 to even 7.5 hours. When we add to it a good energy management during rest, we get a phone with above-average performance. Sure, there are many missing monsters like the Oukitel K10, but Xperia XA2 Ultra has nothing to be ashamed of. The manufacturer also took care of interesting energy saving modes , which are known under the name Stamina. The standard version of this solution limits the operation of some applications. Ultra Stamina limits the availability of the application to the necessary minimum, cutting off all unnecessary elements that could drain the battery. Smart Stamina suggests when we should activate the mode in order for the battery to withstand the end of the day. This is not the end. Sony has developed two additional battery protection technologies. Qnovo Adaptive Charging checks the battery status during charging and corrects the current to protect its capacity. The battery protection function interrupts charging after reaching 90%, and recharging up to 100% takes place immediately before using the phone. Both have the task of extending the life of the cell, but negatively affect the charging time. It takes about 2.5 hours to replenish the energy . In addition, Sony gives you a free charger.
The equipment does not disappoint
I am very pleased that Sony has provided a rich communication base in the Xperia XA2 Ultra. I especially like the fact that we get a full Dual SIM , ie two independent slots for nanoSIM cards. It works in standby mode. Speaking of which, the quality of conversations is fully satisfactory. I have not noticed anything disturbing in this respect, as well as problems with coverage. Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra works great as a phone. For this we also get: USB type C, Bluetooth 5.0 (+ support for aptX), Wi-Fi ac (2.4 and 5 GHz) with Miracast, NFC or GPS with GLONASS. Everything works great. I did not observe any errors. Some people may be saddened by the lack of FM radio. I am happy about the memory card slot with a capacity of up to 256 GB. Thanks to this, you can expand the phone's memory. I have to notice that at this price 32 GB of space for our files is not enough , especially since we have only about 20 GB at our disposal. More memory often offers even twice cheaper smartphones. The multimedia speaker is only one and found on the bottom edge. It is loud and generates good quality sound with a subtle but noticeable amount of bass. The headphones are similar. This is not the world championship, but I see no reason to complain, especially since Sony did not abandon the 3.5mm jack connector. The fingerprint reader has been implemented on the back panel, under the camera . The Japanese say it's a more universal location than the edge switch. In this matter, I will not speak, because in my opinion it is a matter of personal preferences. The reader is active and works well. The only thing that irritated me is the second of reflection before unlocking the screen.
Very nice from Sony that Xperia XA2 Ultra works under the control of Android Oreo . This system is still not a standard, so the Japanese deserve a plus. Of course, this is not a pure version of Oreo, because Sony has introduced several modifications. The producer does not try to change the philosophy of Android in his overlay, but at the most, it should be so varied that it would be more user-friendly. This means, among others adding a few personalization options (themes, transition animations, various icon screens, widgets), the aforementioned energy saving modes, different color profiles, etc. Sony has added its own assistant, which not only tells us how to use the Xperia smartphone, but also removes it junk files. There was a great music player and an even better gallery on board. I'm just asking, why install so many poppers, like Amazon's various programs? In general, the Xperia interface will appeal especially to those mania who are looking for something more than pure Android, at the same time not wanting a system stuffed with unnecessary functions.
Nice performance, but …
The two previous generations of XA Ultra were powered by the company's Mediatek, the family of helio P. Sony sought in this way savings, but apparently came to the conclusion that they are no longer needed, making Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra got a unit from Qualcomm. It is Snapdragon 630 , which we know, among others with HTC U11 Life. The processor is a cluster of 8 Cortex-A53 immortalized cores clocked up to 2.2 GHz, and for the graphics performance is Adreno 508. How does this set work? [wptab style = "4" title = "PC Mark"] [test slug = "pcmark-android" order = "desc" selected = "22564" virtual = "pcmark-android-work" type = "single" product_id = " 22412,22218,21418,22182,22516,22154,22500,22186,22166,22564 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" 3DMark "] [test slug =" 3dmark "order =" desc " selected = "22564" virtual = "3dmark-slingshot-total" type = "single" product_id = "22412,22218,22182,22516,22154,22500,22186,22166,22564"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = " 4 "title =" T-Rex "] [test slug =" gfxbench-fps "order =" desc "selected =" 22564 "type =" single "virtual =" t-rex-3-onscreen "product_id =" 22412, 22218,21418,22182,22516,22154,22500,22186,22166,22564 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Manhattan "] [test slug =" gfxbench-fps "order =" desc " selected = "22564" type = "single" virtual = "manhattan-3-onscreen" product_id = "22412,22218,21418,22182,22516,22154,22500,22186,22166,22564"] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra falls in tests very similar to other devices with systems with similar technology, relatively low gawks giving way to Galaxy A8 from Samsung. The problem is that in a similar price we will calmly buy flagstones from the 2016-2017 period, which in the vast majority of cases offer crushing units Snapdragon 630 in benchmarks . We all know that synthetic tests are not everything, so now I will switch to practical experience. Xperia XA2 Ultra is a working phone that performs all the tasks entrusted to it at a satisfactory pace. It is especially good when there is no comparison with faster devices, which is quite logical. Only large applications show that the CPU on the Cortex-A53 cores and the eMMC 5.1 memory will not provide flagship performance . The same is true of the GPU – most of the titles work without any problems, only a large amount of power for the future is gone and sooner or later there will be titles that will be a challenge for him.Work culture does not raise serious reservations, but I can not say that everything works absolutely smoothly. What irritated me the most was that once in a while the program used to operate the camera did not want to start well, showing the black screen instead of the image that I saw in front of me. It was also sporadic to turn off some app, and especially YouTube. These are not issues that can not be removed with updates, so I am counting on Sony to rectify these inconveniences quickly.
A typical Sony camera
Sony has a very specific approach to cameras in its smartphones. Let it be testified by the fact that the dual camera in the Xperia XA2 Ultra can be found on the front , in the configuration 16 MP + 8 MP. I will say more – one of them has optical image stabilization, which is not offered by the main camera (with the actual resolution of 25 MP, f / 2.0, Sony IMX300). You must admit that this is a rare phenomenon. I will add that the rear camera takes pictures in the top 23 MP, which results from the physical properties of the used sensor. All cameras are served by a dedicated application from Sony. The default mode is automatic, which tries to recognize the scenery and choose the best parameters. Alternatively, you can use the manual mode, which is simplified and given us control only over the basic values. Generally, this is a pretty good app, it's only a shame that the HDR switch is not available from the home screen. It is also worth mentioning the presence of a physical shutter release . >>> View full resolution pictures The main camera works just like almost any smartphone Sony: it's good in the daytime, after dark on average . In good light the only problem is the noise visible in solid colors. I also have to gently attach to the weaker quality at the corners of the frame, but this is the result of using a lens with a fairly wide angle of view. This means that we see more on the picture than on a statistical competitor, but at the expense of slightly smudged edges. Autofocus usually works properly, losing confidence in difficult lighting conditions. This is when Xperia XA2 Ultra shows that there is no best camera on the market. Noises appear on the photos (sometimes blue), and the details are smudged by algorithms that try to get rid of them. The lack of optical image stabilization does not make things easier. Video materials can be recorded in 4K resolution , which is not obvious in the case of medium-sized smartphones. I do not know why a separate mode was made of it. In any case, the quality of materials is quite decent. The number of details recorded could be larger, but the colors, contrast and tonal range are very good. Similarly with Full HD (both in 30 and 60 fps). I will say more – I have the impression that the lower resolution works better than the higher ones, although they are not too big differences. I assess everything positively, especially thanks to solid digital stability. As I mentioned before, Xperia XA2 Ultra has a dual selfie camera. The main has 16 MP, OIS and autofocus, the second 5 MP and is wide-angle (120 degrees). They are accompanied by an LED illuminating the LED. This set looks nice on paper and really works well in reality . I can not say that the Xperia XA2 Ultra is the best selfiesmartphone on the market, due to the slightly too soft photos and noise on solid colors, but nevertheless it is the leading in its price class .
Summary and evaluation
The Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra is a good smartphone that tries to combine mid-range parameters with some of the capabilities and functions of flagship products. This model tempts with a good battery and a large screen , with 16: 9 conservative figures from today's perspective. The strength of the great Xperia is rich communication facilities . The manufacturer thought about almost everything and gave us the full back up of modern standards, thus shaming the products of some competitors (I am addressing these words especially to Huawei). A kind of cherry on the trout is full Dual SIM, more and more difficult to find due to the ever-growing popularity of the hybrid slot. We do not have to give up the expansion of memory, which with 20 GB of space for our data is undoubtedly good information. The Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra has good selfies , one of which is wide-angle, so we can make a nice group photo. A nice accent is the option to shoot video in 4K and Full HD at 60 fps. Pictures made with the main camera also look good. Unfortunately, only during the day, because in the evening and at night it is already quite average. I was disappointed with plastic on the back panel. I could also use a more powerful SoC, and above all an update to improve some system errors. I will not hide that their presence let me down a bit. For consolation we have at least Oreo to start . It's a big plus. Is the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra a model worth our attention? Overall, I think that Sony has created a robust phablet with a large screen that will attract the attention of those people who do not like the 18: 9 aspect ratio. Only if it is worth paying PLN 1899 for it? I would, however, wait for the price to fall by some PLN 200-400. Then Xperia XA2 Ultra will be a really smart choice . [Show_rating]
