ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) has all the features of the flagship – an efficient processor, a bright camera and extensive multimedia features. Only, does all this make the phone really worth buying?
At the end of September last year, I tested the ASUS ZenFone 4 (ZE554KL) for you, which turned out to be a smart phone worth the price. Will it be the same with the ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL), on which the Taiwanese manufacturer told us to wait a long time? You will find out about it after reading the ZenFone 4 Pro .
To put it mildly, the design is very outdated
The ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) made its debut in the second half of last year, at the very moment when almost every major producer in the industry had smartphones with very narrow frames around the screen, or simply more slender than before. The Taiwanese, regardless of the current trends, decided to introduce into the offer a model that is higher even from Moto Z2 Force. Not without reason, I cited this model because Moto has been producing specific smartphones for two years due to its compatibility with Moto Mods. However, what was the purpose of the Taiwanese company? I do not know. I know, however, that the ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) is a large device that will not suit everyone .The first contact was not the most pleasant, especially after switching from Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Honora 9 Lite and OnePlus 5T, and this is because the phablet has a sizable strip at the top and bottom of the screen. I think that the manufacturer could have reduced it by some 40% , thanks to which the ZenFone 4 Pro would significantly increase its attractiveness. The eye, on the other hand, enjoys the frames running along the longer sides of the screen – they are slender, and are hidden under the curved Corning Gorilla glass of the fifth generation , which extends over the entire surface of the front panel. The back wall was also made of the same material, but the characteristic Zen circles were missing. The quality of workmanship is at a high level – the housing elements have been properly folded together. Of course, the ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro is a unibody design, so we do not have access to the battery. On the frame under the display there is a set of navigation buttons – two of them are capacitive, while the third (central) has been enriched with a biometric sensor. The capacitive buttons are backlit in white , which is a huge advantage. Above the screen we have a typical standard – sensors and a Selfie camera in the company of a speaker for conversations (and multimedia at the same time), with a notification diode. We also have two connectors: a type C USB port and a 3.5 mm mini-jack headphone. They are located on the bottom edge, as well as a multimedia speaker, which in this model is a woofer. The middle tones took over the speaker for talks. On the left side we have a hybrid SIM card slot, while the secondary microphone has a secondary microphone. On the back wall there is a set of two lenses armed to the teeth, LED diode, as well as laser autofocus. Lenses have been separated from the rest of the structure and gently protrude above the face . This is where the substitute of real ASUS is found – circular circles scattering light. In addition, there is information about a double optical zoom. The lenses have been secured with sapphire glass. To the full happiness in the case of ZenFone 4 Pro ran out of water tightness , because, however, this is a very desirable feature. And it is not about taking a bath with a smartphone, but about accidentally wetting the device.
The manufacturer put on a battery with a capacity of 3600 mAh , and therefore with the same capacity as the Galaxy S7 edge, as well as close to the Galaxy S8 +, and at the same time greater than the LG V30, or the OnePlus 5T. How does ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) compare with the competition?Very similar. The work times are similar to those offered by the Samsung Galaxy S8 without the additions plus in the name. During everyday use you can use the phablet without a big problem for a full day , and by deciding on a small energy saving (by which I mean rarely reaching for a smartphone), the charger will be needed on average one and a half days. [wptab style = "4" title = "Normal use"] [test slug = "battery" order = "desc" selected = "22554" virtual = "pcmark-work-2" type = "single" product_id = "22554, 22548,22516,22472,22458,22394,22318,22512 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Games "] [test slug =" battery "order =" desc "selected =" 22554 "virtual = "battery-manhattan-3" type = "single" product_id = "22554,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = "4" title = "Charging time"] [test slug = "battery" virtual = "loading-ac" order = "asc" selected = "22554" type = "single" product_id = "22554,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458 , 22394,22318,22512 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] Recharging the battery during the day is very fast – like in OnePlus 5T. Just half an hour to recover, up to 60% . This result makes a huge impression. However, if you had only a quarter of an hour, you would supplement the energy from zero to 30%. However, you can only achieve these results using the 18-watt charger (9V 2A) included in the sales package. It is huge, but considering its brilliant performance, you can accept it. It takes about 80 minutes to complete the energy supply . The included Battery Manager allows you to choose one of the available energy saving scenarios. Among other things, there is intelligent energy management based on the activities performed or according to the schedule.
Good AMOLED screen
ASUS proposes a phablet device with a display with traditional proportions, thus 16: 9. The user receives a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). The content displayed on it looks very good.Screen technology means deep blacks and infinite contrasts, which in turn translates into amazing and lush colors. The color rendering in the AdobeRGB palette is 95.9%, and in the DCI-P3 95.8% . It is therefore very good, although on the market there are smartphones with better calibrated matrices. In the case of maximum brightness, it makes no sense to compare the results on manual settings, as it is known that AMOLED matrices, due to their specificity, never shine with the maximum intensity on the entire surface in manual mode. Only the machine is able to squeeze much more from this screen, which translates into trouble-free use of the device in full sun. The existing light sensor, however, performs properly. [wptab style = "4" title = "Maximum brightness"] [test slug = "screen-battery" virtual = "TEST_JASE_PASS" order = "desc" selected = "22554" type = "single" product_id = "22554,22548, 22516,22388,22474,22318,22512 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Minimum brightness "] [test slug =" screen-battery "virtual =" TEST_JASNOSC_AKU_MIN "order = "asc" selected = "22554" type = "single" product_id = "22554,2548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512"] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] A nice addition is Always on Panel – offers easy access to notifications without having to highlight the phone. The screen can display a clock, which is accompanied by, of course, event notifications and nice graphics. As with Samsung's Always on Display, ASUS focused on personalization, which is why we can choose the style of the watch, as well as the theme of the graphics. In the phone settings we can find additional display modes that enhance the quality of the presented image. There is a night mode, which after activation is designed to reduce the emission of blue light, and thus less tiring sight. We can independently control the intensity of the yellow color. The screen section also has the function responsible for illuminating the capacitive buttons.
A good camera with a Sony matrix
The main camera – characteristics, quality of photos and videos
ASUS put the two best Sony sensors that were available at the time of the creation of the ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL). The result is a combination of the current module, among others, in the HTC U11, as well as that which is in the LG V30. Not without reason, I mention these devices, because it is one of the best photographic smartphones. So how is the tested model? Before answering this question, I suggest you familiarize yourself with the characteristics of both modules. The main camera (with a traditional angle), is a 12-megapixel Sony IMX362 with a size of 1 / 2.55 "- it is characterized by a large single pixel (1.4μm) size, Dual Pixel technology, as well as the relative aperture of the F / 1.7 lens. I could not fail to mention the second generation of laser sensor technology, fast focus measurement (just 0.03 seconds, ASUS TriTech + technology), 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS) working alternately with 3-axis electronic stabilization (EIS). There is also a SuperPixel technology whose task is to reduce noise. The second camera is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX351 (1 / 3.1 ") telephoto lens with a double optical zoom and a 10x total zoom, making it possible to take portraits. With this lens, the focal length is 50mm and the lens aperture is F / 2.6.
Combined with the ability to instantly switch between the main camera with 25mm focal length lens and a new portrait mode that uses two lenses simultaneously to make objects stand out, the ZenFone 4 Pro lets you capture amazing portraits and macro photos with depth of field as in professional photos taken with SLR cameras. -fragment from the manufacturer
Turning to image quality – ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) ranks among the best photomartphones on the market and is a worthy competitor for the best of the best, and therefore Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Google Pixel 2, as well as Apple iPhone X. There is no however, why wonder, because smartphone photography has evolved over recent years, thanks to which even medium-sized artists are able to deliver pictures with the optimal amount of recorded details and a good tonal range. When the lights are running out, ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) is doing surprisingly well, but there is something that does not allow him to become the king of mobile photography. I have the impression that the producer wanted to lighten the photographs at all costs. Unfortunately, at the cost of a lot of noise and a drop in detail . This phenomenon can be observed above all in difficult conditions. In this respect, the higher level presents the recently tested Huawei Mate 10 Pro, because in his pictures there is less noise, and the colors are (in these conditions) more natural. Fortunately, this is a software issue, so Taiwanese, if they want to, can make their equipment better. >>> View the full-resolution example images ASUS boast of optical zoom, which is still a rarity in smartphones. He does not add, however, that the use of this supplement is possible in the professional mode . Deciding to zoom in in automatic mode, you will only use digital zoom. It is a pity that this function has not been somehow clarified and you have to come to it yourself – a trial and error method. Another interesting and also nice addition is the portrait mode, in which we can independently control the aperture (from F / 0.95 to F / 22) and thus affect the final effect of photography (background blur). The standard has become that HDR activates automatically, if necessary – as a result, we get photographs that are looked at with even greater pleasure. However, I noticed that in the case of the ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) this need is almost always. The application for photos has been divided into three cards – shooting modes appear on the left side, and on the right we have available filters. In the middle is the main window, from which we can manage the flash and HDR mode, enable portrait mode, go to the gallery, settings, and also enable recording or take a picture. ASUS also offers an additional button , to which we can assign the most-used mode – by default it is professional. In manual mode, you can set the exposure time (up to 32s), ISO (up to 3200), manage the white balance, as well as select lighting conditions (it is even manual setting temperature in Kelvins). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N5pVrnLHhY Movies can be recorded in many resolutions, and the highest possible is 4K at 30 frames / sec . Added to this is the recording at FHD resolution at 30 and 60 fps, as well as HD and TV (VGA). There is also slow speed (240 fps), but in 720p resolution. If, however, you are able to accept slow motion in 120fps, the compensation will be 1080p resolution. When it comes to quality, I have some reservations. It is true that we get a smooth video material with good detail and clear sound, but strange flickering is unacceptable on a smartphone of this class . The stabilizer works without any reservations, thanks to which it effectively reduces vibrations, and the autofocus cuts the first plan perfectly.
Performance for years
ASUS did not change into small ones and put on the most efficient components available on the market. That's why one of the best Qualcomm SoCs, and therefore Snapdragon 835 (8 x Kryo 280 + Adreno 540) is responsible for performance, working with an above average amount of RAM, which is 6GB (LPDDR4 type) .As it is not difficult to guess, the components used are phenomenal in everyday use, which can also be confirmed by the results of synthetic tests. Phablet has no problem with multitasking, and working on two applications is not a challenge for the ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL). [wptab style = "4" title = "PC Mark"] [test slug = "pcmark-android" order = "desc" selected = "22554" virtual = "pcmark-android-work" type = "single" product_id = " 22554,22548,22516,22388,22394,22318,22512 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" 3DMark "] [test slug =" 3dmark "order =" desc " selected = "22554" virtual = "3dmark-ice-storm-unlimited-total" type = "single" product_id = "22554,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318"] [/ wptab] [ wptab style = "4" title = "T-Rex"] [test slug = "gfxbench-fps" order = "desc" selected = "22554" type = "single" virtual = "t-rex-3-onscreen" product_id = "22554,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = "4" title = "Manhattan"] [test slug = "gfxbench-fps" order = "desc" selected = "22554" type = "single" virtual = "manhattan-3-onscreen" product_id = "22554,22548,22516,22382,22472,22222,22458,22394,22318,22512"] [/ wptab ] [wptab_end] Managing a large amount of RAM is correct, so switching between open processes is t fast enough. It's worth knowing that ZenFone 4 Pro keeps even the heaviest applications in mind for a long time, so that restoring the game is not a problem. Dedicated graphics works perfectly with all games available in the Google store and at the highest settings. Tekken, Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8: Airborne or Mortal Kombat X do not make Adreno 540 the slightest problem. There is no strength in this graphic and it is rather unlikely that something will change in the next few years. ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) works (still) based on the Android version 7.1.1 Nougat with the security level from January 2018. However, it is not clean, because it has been enriched with the ZenUI 4.0 interface , which brings with it a lot of additional solutions and a highly modified interface. ZenUI 4.0 is a redesigned look, as well as a lot of original applications. Of these more interesting, it is worth to mention Page Marker , which allows you to save web pages and read them later in offline mode. There is also an extensive mobile manager – it allows, among other things, to speed up the device by freeing RAM and closing active processes; power management in the phone by changing modes, monitoring data consumption, and managing notifications. Do not forget about the support for gestures, the extended weather application, or the one-hand operation mode, which can be activated by double-taping the touchpad under the screen.
Equipment: only FM radio
ASUS focused on the latest communication solutions. As a result, the consumer receives everything you can expect : a dual-band WiFi wireless module (802.11 ac / a / b / g / n, 2.4GHz & 5GHz), Galileo satellite navigation system, USB type C connector, NFC, LTE cat.12 modem , hybrid nanoSIM card slot, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 LE. Almost all the communication standards used work well and did not cause problems during testing. I can only gently complain about the GPS , which at some point gently got lost, which can be seen in the attached screenshot of the Endomondo application. However, the speed of catching the fix is at the highest level, for which I can praise ASUS.I have no objections to voice calls and their quality. The smartphone does not lose its range, the sound is loud enough, and the microphones pick up the voice well. Normally I tested on Orange and Plus network cards. The internal memory is 128GB. 111 GB is available to the user. Places are enough for many favorite games and applications. Remember that the mentioned memory can be expanded, because the equipment is a microSD reader that supports cards with a capacity of up to 2TB. The USB type C port offers support for OTG , which makes it possible to connect external storage devices . The smartphone can not cope with 2.5 "drives without its own power source. The sales set, however, lacked a dedicated adapter that would enable the connection of these devices. ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) is equipped with two loudspeakers – one of them (on the lower rim) produces low tones, while the second (above the screen) – medium ones. The whole sounds nice and is at the right volume level – enough when playing, listening to music and watching movies. After connecting the headset, the sound is matched to the 192 kHz / 24-bit Hi-Res converter, and the good quality is additionally provided by the DTS and extended equalizer. The active fingerprint reader in the phone works properly, although it is noticeably slower than the competition. We can define up to five fingerprints. It was placed in a traditional place – under the display. Unlocking the phone with its use is convenient.
Summary and evaluation
ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) on the background of competitive smartphones from the highest price range is very good, but in my opinion the biggest drawback is the outdated design . Design fits in 2016 – then debuted such models as the Galaxy S7 edge, LG G5, or the Huawei P9 Plus. Unfortunately, he wanted ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) to appear in the middle of last year, and then the long screens and narrow frames started to take the lead. This is probably the most lacking in the tested model. I have no objections to the rest. Two powerful lenses have been installed on the equipment, which are able to take very good quality photos. There is a high work culture and proper performance, guaranteed by above average RAM and efficient SoC.We welcome the presence of the latest communication standards, as well as stereo speakers from which good sound comes out. In the case of the ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL), you can not forget about the very fast charging, which compensates for the standard working time on one charge cycle. So if design is not a problem for you, then you can easily invest in the ASUS offer and know that you will not be disappointed with its possibilities. However, if you want a modern smartphone, and at the same time very efficient and fast, it is necessary to look at three models – Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, as well as the OnePlus 5T. I have tested all three for you at gsmManiaK.pl. [Show_rating]
