Honor 7X is a cheaper version of the Huawei Mate 10 lite. These smartphones, however, have a few differences that are worth bending over.
Honor 7X is the latest Huawei sub-brand proposal on the Polish market. This is the middle class equipment in which the manufacturer has put on a display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9, a dual camera, and also quite efficient components. Is this a more interesting model than Huawei Mate 10 lite, who has recently tested for you Damian? You will find out about it after reading the Honor 7X review . We would like to thank for the x -kom.pl store for renting a smartphone for testing. Honor 7X buy in x-kom.pl
A video review of Honor 7X
I also invite you to watch the Honora 7X video review – the material is available on my YouTube channel . Soon you will also find a comparison Honora 7X with Huawei Mate 10 lite. https://youtu.be/eSGAE_zG_uo
Similar to Mate 10 lite, but …
Honor 7X was made in a similar, although not identical, design as the Huawei Mate 10 lite . Only the placement of the elements on the body (including the placement of the biometric sensor) is similar, as well as the use of aluminum for the production of the rear panel. What the manufacturer did better in the case of the sub-brand product, the front panel finish – 2.5D glass has been much better bent , so that the phablet is not only better presented, but also is more pleasant to touch. However, this procedure caused Honor 7X to be slightly thicker, although in everyday use it does not interfere in any way. Not only that, it is not even noticeable and noticeable when we keep two smartphones in our hands. The quality of workmanship is at the appropriate level and the construction elements have been with each other properly folded. It's a unibody design, so we do not have access to the battery. What I can consider a shortcoming is the delicate wobble of the buttons on the right side , and therefore the switch and the volume adjustment bar. The loses are bigger than in Mate 10 lite, in which I did not notice them. Let's stop for a moment on the back wall, which is made of aluminum covered with matt paint. Very strongly in the eye are two protruding lenses protruding above the face of the housing , on which the construction rests, when the smartphone lies on the "backs". This is definitely the weakest element of the Honora 7X design – I am more appealing to the solution introduced in Mate 10 lite, where the lenses are placed one above the other and are combined into a whole. The lower rim was occupied by a multimedia speaker, a microUSB 2.0 port (unfortunately, there was no USB type C), a 3.5mm mini-jack connector, as well as microphone. On the top, a secondary microphone is placed. The tray for the hybrid SIM card slot (nanoSIM + nanoSIM / nanoSIM + microSD) hit the left side. On the right there is a switch and a volume control bar. The biometric sensor has been gently recessed into the casing – it is well positioned, making it very natural to use it. Honor 7X is a phablet that looks good and just as well in your hand . However, this is equipment that can cause problems with one hand, although this is not impossible.
Battery: one day of work on charging
The 3340 mAh rechargeable battery is responsible for the amount of time spent away from the socket, and therefore quite average considering the display with a diagonal of almost six inches. However, a little more battery has been used in Galaxy S8 + from Samsung, and in this LG G6, the capacity is lower by 40 mAh. Looking at the flagship devices and current trends, I consider the cell present in the tested pha to be standard. The battery provides one day of work with the device away from the socket, the display being turned on for about five hours when we use LTE networks for most days. If you decide to use almost all day WiFi, you can count on an additional hour on the screen, assuming that the management of the backlight is automatically adjusted by the existing light sensor. [wptab style = "4" title = "Normal use"] [slug test = "battery" order = "desc" selected = "22500" virtual = "pcmark-work-2" type = "single" product_id = "22500, 22468,22354,22488,22478,22464 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Games "] [test slug =" battery "order =" desc "selected =" 22500 "virtual =" battery- manhattan-3 "type =" single "product_id =" 22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Charging time "] [slug test =" battery " virtual = "loading-ac" order = "asc" selected = "22500" type = "single" product_id = "22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464"] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] Honor 7X for full charge I need about two hours (119 minutes). However, if you do not have that much time, it's worth knowing that by leaving your smartphone under the charger for 30 minutes you will recover 34%, so it's pretty good. If you want to extend your working time, it is worth using a battery manager in which you can choose one of the available energy management scenarios. By default, in the most restrictive mode the functionality has been limited to the basic functions (the ability to make voice calls or send text messages). Honor 7X also means saving energy by activating a lower screen resolution – in this case it is HD + (1440 x 720 pixels).
The screen is clear and readable
Honor 7X has a display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9, which has a diagonal of 5.93 "and a resolution of FullHD + , and therefore 2160 x 1080 pixels. With this characteristic, the FullView screen made in IPS technology has a density of dots per inch at the level of approximately 407, which is a value appropriate for the segment of medium-sized devices. Before discussing the brightness, additional settings and color reproduction, it is worth now to raise one point, namely to scale the application to an aspect ratio of 18: 9 . Huawei took care of this possibility, so that by running most applications for the first time we see on the screen a message about the possibility of activating the full-screen mode. And without a doubt, this is very important information, because there was even a lack of matching videos from YouTube – the video is stretched and more precisely approximated. The proportions applied translate into a more comfortable work with two open applications on a split screen. Content is also more comfortable to consume, as it simply fits more than the traditional 16: 9 screen. [wptab style = "4" title = "Maximum brightness"] [test slug = "screen-battery" virtual = "TEST_JASE_PASS" order = "desc" selected = "22500" type = "single" product_id = "22500,22468, 22354,22488,22478,22464 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Minimum brightness "] [test slug =" screen-battery "virtual =" TEST_JASNOSC_AKU_MIN "order =" asc "selected =" 22500 "type =" single "product_id =" 22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] Maximum brightness is at a very good level – it's almost 540 cd / m2, so that during sunny days there will be no problem with the readability of the screen. I do not have any reservations to the minimum illumination which, according to our calibrator, is 2 cd / m2. This is a value that does not adversely affect the use of Honor 7X in a limited light, the more so because the manufacturer even took care of the blue light filter . The ambient light sensor is working properly. Let me write a few words about the color rendering of the applied screen. In my opinion, the manufacturer could better apply to this element – the panel used in the Honor 7X is only good (instead of very good), because the coverage of the sRGB color palette reaches about 85% .
A double camera is doing well
The main camera – characteristics, quality of photos and videos
Honor 7X, like most smartphones in the Huawei and Honor sub-brands range, has been equipped with a set of two lenses on the back wall . One of them is the main camera, while the additional one is to blur the background in the background, which (to do it more effectively) has a low resolution. The main camera – Sony IMX298 -ma 16MP, and the lens has an F / 2.0 brightness and a single pixel size of 1.25 μm . The equipment is also equipped with an LED lighting diode. There was also a quick focus measurement (PDAF). Do you know where to find such a lens? Among others in ZenFone 3 (ZE520KL), Xiaomi Mi 5, or the OnePlus 3T. https://www.gsmmaniak.pl/624272/asus-zenfone-3-ze520kl-test/ You can not count on such a good quality of photos, as in the case of the first of these. This is because there is no optical image stabilization and a laser focus measurement sensor . Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that Honor 7X is a good photo camera. Pictures taken with daylight look good and look great. They are also characterized by appropriate detail and sharpness – the machine is good at choosing parameters. It is also not bad with shooting in worse conditions. Of course, the pictures come out worse than during the day and it is an undeniable fact, although there is no tragedy – it's just like it should be on a smartphone from the middle shelf . I also do not have any serious reservations about photos with the effect of blurred backgrounds in portrait mode. An additional lens (2MP) does what it should do. We can regulate the blur effect through a dedicated slider. >>> View sample images in full resolution Movies will be recorded in the maximum Full HD resolution (1080p), at 30 frames per second . They hold as good a level as photos. In addition to the standard FHD, we also have lower resolutions available – HD, VGA, QVGA and format for MMS messages. It's even slow motion, but only in VGA resolution. It's strange that Huawei did not put on HD in slow motion and 4K for ordinary movies. The more so that the standard FHD and slow motion in VGA offers even a lot cheaper Huawei P9 lite mini. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLdZQYvKoak
Front camera and photo application
On the front there is an 8MP camera with F / 2.0 light , and therefore with optics of decent brightness. This translates into good-quality photos and video materials that can be recorded in Full HD at 30fps. However, it is worth knowing that the beautifying mode is turned on from the machine. In addition, if you want to record in the mentioned mode, then only in HD resolution. The photo application, as always with the Huawei and Honor smartphones, does not disappoint – it offers a lot of functions and is very intuitive. The left card includes HDR, slow motion, professional mode , light painting, time-lapse mode and a few more. In manual mode, you can set, among other things, exposure time, adjust the light sensitivity (ISO from Auto up to 1600), brightness, as well as choose the lighting conditions (it is even manual setting temperature in Kelvins).
Performance like your predecessor
The computing power in Honor 7X is provided by the original Kirin 659 chip manufactured by HiSilicon, which is owned by Huawei. Sam SoC is just another variation of the well-known Kirin 650, in which the manufacturer decided to crank up the cores. Thus, we get a SoC system consisting of an octa-core processor , in which the four Cortex-A53 cores are characterized by clocking at the level of 2.36 GHz and another four Cortex-A53 cores, but with reduced clock speed to 1.7 GHz. Unfortunately, we still have a dual-core ARM Mali-T830MP2 graphics chip. It is worth adding that the technological process in which Hisilicon Kirin 659 is produced is 16nm with FinFET technology. So we have a typical half-deck set made by Huawei, because (as Damian rightly pointed out in Mate 10 lite review) the SoC used is only slightly higher in performance than the one in Huawei P9 lite 2017 or Huawei P10 lite. On the plus of the tested model, however, a larger amount of RAM , which is 4GB, speaks. [wptab style = "4" title = "PC Mark"] [test slug = "pcmark-android" order = "desc" selected = "22500" virtual = "pcmark-android-work" type = "single" product_id = " 22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" AnTuTu "] [test slug =" android-antutu-6 "order =" desc "selected =" 22500 "virtual =" antutu-total-6 "type =" single "product_id =" 22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" 3DMark "] [test slug = "3dmark" order = "desc" selected = "22500" virtual = "3dmark-ice-storm-unlimited-total" type = "single" product_id = "22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464"] [ / wptab] [wptab style = "4" title = "T-Rex"] [test slug = "gfxbench-fps" order = "desc" selected = "22500" type = "single" virtual = "t-rex-3 -onscreen "product_id =" 22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464 "] [/ wptab] [wptab style =" 4 "title =" Manhattan "] [test slug =" gfxbench-fps "order =" desc " selected = "22500" type = "single" virtual = "manhattan-3-onscreen" product_id = "22500,22468,22354,22488,22478,22464"] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] As you can see Huawei does not make significant changes relative to its predecessors . However, this does not change the fact that the phablet performs very well during use. Similarly as in the case of the previously mentioned proposals, the same problem is visible – I experienced a slowdown in the operation when more demanding programs were launched. RAM management is correct, so switching between open processes is fast enough . The only drawback is the restoration of "heavy" processes after a long time and, above all, demanding games. The dedicated ARM Mali-T830MP2 graphic design handles the majority of games available in the Google store, although it is worth bearing in mind that not all titles are running smoothly on the highest details . However, I had no major problems with Mortal Kombat X or Real Racing 3 (on the proposed settings). However, this is not a future arrangement, so it may turn out that in the next two years it will turn out to be insufficient. Sklepowy Honor 7X is based on the Android version 7.0 Nougat, which has been enriched with the EMUI interface . Soon (this is official information), the smartphone will receive an update to Android 8.0 Oreo with the latest interface EmotionUI. The system overlay from Huawei is one of the best in my opinion, because it is clear, transparent and functional at the same time. Huawei offers its programs and very useful features that make the use of the phablet more enjoyable. The default interface has been deprived of the application drawer, and thus everything that will be installed is uploaded directly to the desktop. Huawei also allows you to return to the classic style of the screen, which will restore the application drawer. There is also a simple mode, which is characterized by large icons and the most-needed functions. Below you will find a list of several more interesting functions and applications that you will find in EMUI :.
- Phone manager is an application that offers system acceleration, cache clearing, transmission manager, as well as a drop manager.
- Safe – function as the name suggests is a place that only we can access. Useful if we have something to hide. You can choose the location of the safe, and in order to get to it, enter the password or unlock the content using a biometric sensor.
- Wi-Fi + is a useful feature for everyone who wants to be in the network all the time. After turning it on, the smartphone automatically switches between the WiFi module and the LTE modem to improve the data transmission. In addition, when it detects a known WiFi network nearby, it connects to it
- Screen recording – a useful feature for people who create guides and provide all kinds of content. To activate the recording, you need to hold the power + volume up button
- Hanging button – offers quick access to function buttons, allows you to lock the screen, as well as quick optimization
Poor communication facilities
Communication facilities in smartphones from the middle price range are still their Achilles heel, and this is because manufacturers with stubborn maniac implement outdated solutions. Unfortunately, Honor 7X in this field is no exception . Equipped with a hybrid card slot in the nanoSIM standard, which using the LTE category sixth modem is able to transmit data with a maximum speed of up to 300Mbps. Among the wireless solutions you can also count on a single-band WiFi module in the 802.11n standard . I do not have any objections to its operation. There were also Bluetooth 4.1 and GPS with A-PS and GLONASS. However , NFC , a newer WiFi and BT module, and a type C USB port were missing. Instead of the latter, we get a standard microUSB 2.0. There is an FM radio. I have delicate reservations about the quality of the connections made, and more specifically their quality. Phablet does not lose the range, and the sound is loud enough , but the interlocutors complained about wheezing in the earpiece. Normally I tested on Orange and Plus network cards. The built-in memory is 64 GB , but after deducting the system files, this value decreases to around 51GB. You can use a microSD card for that, thus giving up the dualSIM option. However, these are the charms of hybrid slots. The multimedia speaker is one – almost standard in the case of Huawei, although there are exceptions. The quality of the sound being emitted does not fall on your knees – it is rather correct, although you will not want to party with it, because it is simply too silent for such actions in the world. In a smaller group, however, you can listen to music. It also writes very well for signaling events. On the headset (I plugged in the private one, no set in the set) no crazy. The sound is loud enough, but the tone of the sound leaves something to be desired. Medium tones predominate, and low tones are secondary. The fingerprint reader in Honor 7X works as it should. It reads the defined imprint correctly every time. Of course it's active, so just press your finger to unlock the screen. In addition, it supports gestures (you can eject / hide the notification bar, view photos in the gallery, take a picture, answer a call or stop an alarm).
Summary and evaluation
Honor 7X is without a doubt one of the best mid-range smartphones . It has, above all, a good price-to-performance ratio, although it fails in terms of communication facilities. Nevertheless, by deciding on expenditure in the amount of PLN 1150 , you will get a phablet about a proper work culture, one that meets the expectations of most users – everyday work with Honor 7X is a pleasure. A fact worth noting is the right amount of RAM and also the data for the user. The strength of the Honor 7X is, of course, the 18: 9 aspect ratio, which facilitates browsing content and also increases the comfort of use. I also have to praise the screen for maximum luminance. You should not feel disappointed with the work time on one charge, because it is rather standard. The most disappointing communication facilities , and above all the lack of NFC, making mobile payments using Honor 7X are not possible. Of course, you could use faster WiFi and a newer USB standard, but it is the lack of NFC that I consider the biggest disadvantage. Honor 7X does not deserve the title of the perfect photographic medium, because, as I mentioned before, it loses with ASUS ZenFone 3 in terms of photographs taken after dark. Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that at the time of the release, Honor 7X was cheaper. Despite the aforementioned shortcomings, I am of the opinion that Honor 7X is a great offer that I can recommend with a clear conscience.
