ASUS ZenFone 4 (ZE554KL) is a reasonably priced smartphone with good camera, modern design and rich equipment. Is it worth buying this phone? You will find out from my review of this year's ZenFone 4.
The launch of the new ZenFone 4 phone line took place in August of this year, but we had to wait until September for our European debut. New models have already appeared in Polish stores, so it's time to see if your money is worth it. The maniacal viewfinder I take the ZenFone smartphone 4. The device is interesting, at first glance it seems that the manufacturer eliminated all the shortcomings of predecessor, which we presented in December last year. Does that mean we are dealing with an ideal mid-range phablet? For this question I will try to answer in my review ZenFone 4 (ZE554KL)
Housing and appearance
ASUS decided not to experiment with the design, so ZenFone 4 is in some sense only the improved model ZenFone 3 (ZE520KL), which test you have read us already. Still, we are dealing with a case that decided to use a metal connection with 2.5D glass – the latter covers both panels. This adds to the elegance of the phone and improves grip. Smartphone makes a good impression, although the devices presented this year still a long way. The Galaxy S8, the LG V30, and the iPhone 8. It's my favorite, though, and the grinded and polished body feels great in ZenFone 4.Quality The design is at the highest level – the housing elements have been properly folded together, and the volume control bar and switch have no play. Of course, the ASUS ZenFone 4 is a unibody design, so we do not have access to the battery – but there was no previous solution. On the frame below the display is a set of navigation buttons – two of them are capacitive and the third (central) has been enriched with a biometric sensor. The capacitive buttons are illuminated in white , which is a great advantage, but also an improvement over the predecessor. Over the screen we have a standard standard – sensors and a camera to Selfie in the company of the speaker for talks (and multimedia at the same time), with a notification light. We also have two connectors: a USB Type C port and a 3.5mm mini-jack . They are located on the bottom edge, as well as the multimedia speaker, which in this case is a subwoofer. Average Tony took over the speaker for talks. On the left side we have a hybrid SIM card slot. It's time to discuss the news in ZenFone 4, which I'm most pleased with. Of course, the back wall, which is much better than its predecessor . It's a must to put lenses that do not protrude above the face of the housing. They are only in the company of the lighting diode and the laser autofocus has been removed. Why? You will find out from the chapter devoted to the camera. ASUS ZenFone 4 in terms of design and performance is a high-end shelf. ZenFone 4 is nice, and it's very cool in the palm of your hand. You can see progress with respect to the predecessor , although as I mentioned earlier – even to the forefront is still a bit short.
The manufacturer has placed a battery with a capacity of 3300 mAh , which is quite normal for a device equipped with a 5.5 "display. However, working time is no longer as common as it might seem. With daily use with ZenFone 4, you can enjoy a full day without a problem , and by choosing a small energy saving (by what I mean by less frequent use of a smartphone), the loader will need us on average every two days. And this is the result, which will not be bothered by any of this year's high-end smartphone. ASUS ZenFone 4 in the synthetic test is much better than this year's flagship , although it was placed behind the Moto Z2 Play and Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017), where the battery optimization is at the highest level – with these models little hardware is able to win the fight. The ASUS ZenFone 4 is a phablet device and is therefore equipped with a 5.5 " display, displaying Full HD content (1920 x 1080 pixels). This is 0.3 "more than the predecessor, although the proportions themselves have not changed – there is still no panel here 18: 9. However, this does not change the fact that in this class the proposed parameters are most acceptable – you can comfortably browse content, play ASUS has put up an IPS + screen that offers wide viewing angles, high luminance and average color reproduction – colors seem to be juicy, but actually they are flushed out. Phablet defends a wide range of display brightness settings (maximum luminance reaches 671 cd / m2), which means that the phablet can be used under any conditions – it does not matter if the sun is shining directly on the screen or if the phone is used at dusk. In settings we can find additional display modes that conquer the quality of the presented image. There is even a reading mode that, when activated, reduces the emission of blue light and thus less tired eyes. We can also control the intensity of the yellow color.
Main camera – characteristics, quality of pictures and videos
ASUS has put on a set of two lenses – one traditional and the other with a wide angle. The main camera is equipped with Sony IMX362 sensor with a resolution of 12MP (a single pixel 1.4μm pixel) and light F / 1.8. This is the same sensor that was placed on the HTC U11 , although the optics let less light. The wide-angle lens is based on an 8 MP matrix and the optics angle is 120 degrees.Before I go into the shooting characteristics, let me just mention that ASUS has abandoned the laser focus for Dual-Pixel and PDAF technology , so the camera will focus in 0.03 seconds. As far as picture quality is concerned, it's no secret that ASUS is still on the level. Pictures taken with daylight look very good . They feature a great deal of detail as well as vivid colors. The machine handles itself well and manages the white balance, contrast as well as exposure and sharpness. HDR automatically activates if needed. >>> See example photos in full resolution I'm worried about photos in worse lighting conditions when the lights are less. Then there is visible noise and the detail is falling . This is strange, because I have the impression that it was better to undergo such conditions in the predecessor. ASUS ZenFone 4, despite the same sensor as the HTC U11, is in fact far behind the Taiwanese flag. Likewise, the situation with a wide angle lens – in good conditions is really good, but after dark the detail is clearly falling. Movies can be recorded at up to 4K resolution. Of course, it is also possible to record movies at FHD resolution at 30 fps, as well as at 60 fps. Front camera and photo-taking application
In the case of the Selfager webcam, ASUS set it to 8MP with F / 2.0 light. There is no focus (autofocus) and physical LEDs, but instead we get the screen illumination. The quality of the photos is good, thanks to PixelMaster 4.0 with default beautification mode enabled. In addition, using the front camera, you can record footage in FHD resolution. Among shooting modes is widescreen (140 °). So we have a complete kit for Selfie. The photo application is divided into three tabs – the shooting modes are displayed on the left and the filters on the right are available on the right. In the middle is the main window, from which we can manage the flash, HDR mode, switch between standard and wide angle, go to the gallery, and also enable recording or take a picture. ASUS is so sure of the ZenFone 4's photo capabilities that it even decided to expose a professional mode that also got its switch on the home screen.
Performance and system
Available in Poland ASUS ZenFone 4 is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, and therefore the enhanced SD625, which many companies have used (and still are) used on mid-priced phones. It is a pity that Poland is not one of those countries where the Snapdragon 660 model is sold.The Qualcomma mobile system is made in a 14nm process and consists of an 8-core processor (4x ARM Cortex- A53@2.2 GHz + 4x ARM Cortex- A53@1.9GHz), as well as the Adreno 508 graphics chip. SoC is supported by 4 gigabytes of LPDDR4 RAM. During everyday use, I did not feel the discomfort resulting from the presence of less efficient SoC than on my Galaxy S7 edge. Both devices work very similarly, and differences can only be seen when loading more demanding applications (read games). Then ZenFone 4 stays slightly behind, but downtime is a concept that ASUS ZenFone 4 does not. Of course, this is due to the management of RAM, so switching between open processes is fast enough . It is good to know that ZenFone 4 has been enhanced with OptiFlex, which is to keep all your time (up to three) in memory. As far as performance is concerned, the smartphone cope well with the titles available on Google Play, providing a smooth and consistent gameplay experience. ASUS ZenFone 4 is based on Android version 7.1.1 Nougat with security level of August 2017. It is not pure, as it has been enriched with the ZenUI 4.0 interface , which brings a lot of additional solutions and a heavily modified interface. ZenUI 4.0 is a completely redesigned look, as well as a lot of authoring applications . The more interesting of these are the Page Marker, which allows you to save web pages and read them offline later. It also has an enhanced mobile manager – it allows you to speed up your device by freeing up RAM and shutting down active processes; Power management on the phone by changing modes, monitoring data consumption, and managing notifications. Do not forget to also support gestures, extended weather applications, or one-handed operation, which can be activated by double tapping the touch pad below the screen.
ASUS has put the latest communication solutions. As a result, the consumer gets everything expected: dual-band WiFi (802.11 ac / b / g / n, 2.4GHz & 5GHz), Galileo satellite navigation system, USB Type C, NFC, LTE cat.12 Hybrid nanoSIM card slot, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 LE. Almost all standards of communication used are working properly and do not affect me when testing problems. Gently I can only complain about the GPS, which at some point gently lost , as you can see on the attached screenshot of Endomondo. However, the cracking speed of the fixa is at the highest level, for which ASUS can boast. Internal memory of the eMCP type is sufficiently large (64 GB). For the user is available about 52 GB. Places are enough for many favorite games and applications. Also, there is no need to add a memory card up to 2TB. The USB Type C port offers OTG support , allowing for external storage. In the sales kit, there is no dedicated adapter, which would make it possible to connect these devices. The company has also decided to implement a chip with contactless NFC technology (Near Field Communication) as well as FM radio. By the end of the communication section, it is worth mentioning the most important feature – making voice calls and their quality. Phablet does not lose sight, the sound is loud enough , and the microphones are very good at raising their voice. I tested the equipment on Orange and Plus network cards.As you already know, the ASUS ZenFone 4 comes with two multimedia speakers – one from the bottom (lower edge) and the other from the other (above the screen) – medium. The whole thing sounds nice, although I know better music smartphones and I do not mean here this year's Japanese flagship, and the average ZTE Axon 7 mini. When connected to a headset, 192 kHz / 24-bit Hi-Res converter responds to the sound. The fingerprint reader during the tests worked properly and fast enough.
Summary and evaluation
ASUS ZenFone 4 is without a doubt successful successor model from last year . The manufacturer not only improved the design, but also set new technological solutions. We get a phablet that will work out during everyday use and more importantly keep us going all day. It is worth to pay attention to the camera, which offers good quality pictures, rich communication facilities, very bright display as well as proper optimization and good performance. But there are no shortcomings – before I go to see them, let me praise ASUS for a smooth response to feedback from users and reviewers. Thanks to this, ZenFone 4 got rid of the biggest disadvantages of its predecessor – added backlighting, NFC came out, rear panel was rearranged and lenses inside the casing were rebuilt. And slim interface, which in the previous version was heavily cluttered.What the manufacturer should improve in the near future is primarily shooting after dark, because photos at this moment are quite average to not write weak. Negatives include color reproduction, as if it was not at a lower level than many other devices in this class. ASUS ZenFone 4 does not have a better chance with this year's flagship, for that It can calmly compete with Moto Z2 Play and come out victorious – thanks to the second wide angle lens, which is very much desirable by many.
