We test Xiaomi Mi6 – an inexpensive and well equipped Chinese phone. Is low price and strong specification enough to recommend this smartphone? Find answers in our Xiaomi Mi6 review.
Xiaomi Mi6 is the latest flagship in the Chinese Xiaomi offer. This company is primarily concerned with the excellent value for money, so the phone offers many top-notch solutions, while being at the same time noticeably cheaper than the top deals of Samsung, LG, HTC or Sony. I decided to check the equipment and find out if the low price did not cost too much. Currently you can buy Xiaomi Mi6 in Chinese stores – for example in Gearbest . For the tested version with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of memory you have to pay about 1600-1700 zlotys without VAT, and sometimes even less. If the package is stopped by the customs office you will have to pay 23% of the amount, but the price will never exceed the 2000 level. In Polish distribution, the smartphone should appear in this quarter.
Housing and appearance
Fashionable smartphone made from glass did not miss Xiaomi, who once again put up this material in his flagship device. It is a pity that the producer has not decided on the metal, as in the Xiaomi Mi5s, or at least that is my opinion. It is difficult to say with certainty whether the glass used is Gorilla Glass (if someone says it, it points to the 4th generation), but it does not matter much, because during the test the casing did not catch a single scratch . This is probably more important than listing in the Mi6 specification. The design looks solid and well folded, and the only problem is the loose fitting of the volume controls and the switch on the right edge. Besides, I have no comments. What is the biggest disadvantage of glass? In addition to the brittleness, which I have not tested experimentally, I must indicate the susceptibility to collection of dirt . Perhaps most customers are buying eyeglasses and glossy cases may be pleasing, but can you make sure the phone from the store display is still clean? Only then looks aesthetically and Xiaomi Mi6 is no exception in this respect. If the phone was waterproof, it could have been rinsed off, and so you have to be satisfied only with the resistance to accidental splashes . Actually, the only element that does not meet the waterproofing requirements is the USB port, but it is enough that the hardware does not survive bathing. The tested smartphone can not boast of extremely narrow frames around the display, so it is an old-fashioned device. It may be pleasing to the contrary. For me it's not a big problem, but I would not offend if the screen was a little diagonal in the same housing. Still, I must admit that the Xiaomi Mi6 is well placed in the palm of your hand and comfortable to use because it is slim and the rear panel is gently bent on each side, which further facilitates the grip. Fortunately, the phone frame has been developed in a sensible way. Above the screen was one of the speakers (and next to it came a white notification light), and on the bottom edge of the second, in the company of the USB-C, so we get stereo speakers. The fingerprint reader also hit the front, just like the function keys, which are not only illuminated, but you can also change their configuration. On the top edge we will find an infrared port. Unfortunately, the 3.5mm jack was removed from the casing.
The Xiaomi Mi6 comes with a 3350 mAh battery . It's quite a bit of a hardware with a relatively small screen, enclosed in a slim case. It is also a 10% increase compared to Xiaomi Mi5. When we add a 10nm processor, we get really good performance. I myself loaded the smartphone every 1.5 days , sometimes less often. I consider this a very good result, especially in such a powerful device – with a very powerful processor and a huge amount of operational memory. You can count on up to 7 hours of on-screen Wi-Fi, and with LTE / 3G connectivity, the time is reduced by 2 hours. Of course, a lot depends on whether and how much you will be playing or taking pictures, but I sincerely doubt there is a need to find a socket before late evening. The smartphone supports QC 3.0 fast charging technology , so the energy can be replenished in about 1.5 hours and up to 30% in 15-20 minutes.
The Xiaomi Mi5 offers 5.15 " Full HD IPS screen and exactly the same performance as the Xiaomi Mi6. Generally, I would not be surprised if both models are exactly the same panel, because they offer very similar performance.Full HD resolution (1920×1080) on a 5.15 inch screen is excellent and can not complain about the sharpness of the projected image. If the die was made in AMOLED Pentile technology, we could discuss it, but in the Xiaomi Mi6 we will find IPS display with full pixel layout. Only virtual reality fans have a reason to complain. The manufacturer claimed that the Xiaomi Mi6 screen could shine with a maximum brightness of 600 cd / m2 and a minimum of 1 cd / m2. Our measurements show that to fulfill this promise ran out little, because after 1 cd / m2 on each side. This slight inconsistency as we can Xiaomi forgive. In practice, the display of the phone is readable in all conditions , including even moments when the strong sun falls directly on the screen. In the dark, reading comfort is the highest possible. I also did not notice the digitizer grid, which was the case with the HTC U11. In the automatic setting, the smartphone adjusts the contrast to the lighting, and in enhanced contrast mode conquers it, just like colors. The most neutral mode is the standard level, which is characterized by the best calibration and warm white. There is also a color temperature slider and a blue light filter with a function of working at certain times. The Xiaomi Mi6 screen does not support HDR content, but in the case of the IPS matrix it is an art for the art. Besides, no direct competitor in this price range can not do so, so tested smartphone has nothing to be ashamed of.
We can use the application prepared by the manufacturer to operate the Xiaomi Mi6. It is enhanced and offers many modes, including panorama, self-timer, square, night and professional modes. In the latter, we can control the white balance, exposure, sharpness, ISO and choose the lens we want to take pics. There are also filters and easy access to HDR and flash settings. Other options are already buried deep enough and hard to use if you do not want to have a long time playing in settings.
In the Xiaomi Mi6 we will find a double main camera . We know several different ways to implement this solution, and Xiaomi has opted for a standard lens and a telephoto lens for portraiture. The first one based on the better sensor (Sony IMX386), is also brighter (f / 1.8), boasts a larger pixel (1.25μm) and supports optical image stabilization. Additional camera is Samsung S5K3M3 with f / 2.6 light, 1μm pixels and narrower field of view. The whole thing is to make 2x zoom shots (not an optical zoom) and smudge the background. The maximum resolution is 12.2 MP in 4: 3 format. [Gallery ids = "718502,718504,718506,718510,718512,718514,718516,718518,718520,718522,718526,718530"] The quality of the pictures taken depends largely on the lighting conditions. The sunny day is really good, a little better than it was in the predecessor's case. I can praise first of all the natural coloring of photos and a good amount of recorded details, although I would advise not to exaggerate with approximation or framing. Autofocus works under such conditions. The tonal range may be better, and sometimes the bright elements may be overexposed, but photos taken with the Xiaomi Mi6 may be appealing . To the forefront in this aspect is really little missing. Unfortunately, any deterioration in lighting causes noise to appear and autofocus is less and less reliable. In such situations the photos are often not sharp, especially outside the center of the frame, and natural colors are pale. It is the pictures in difficult conditions are the achilles heel of this model . The subject can be improved with a tripod and longer exposure time, but in mobile photography, the photos are more important than the hand. Devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 deal noticeably better. The best photo smartphones are out of reach. [Gallery ids = "718546,718548,718550"] Portrait photos are a little different. The camera used to make them is poorer quality and without much light it becomes practically useless. Automation knows this perfectly because in such situations it does not use this lens, it only starts the digital zoom of the main camera, and we all know that it is hard then reasonable sense. In general, you can do with Xiaomi Mi6 nice portrait picture , but I'm not happy with this solution.
Sample movie shot with Xiaomi Mi6 phone
Movies can be recorded in 4K and Full HD, but only at 30 fps. As well as in slow and accelerated pace. In settings we can choose whether autofocus is to work continuously or whether we prefer to control it on the fly. Quality is fine, and from the sound I am very satisfied with. Here, too, we encounter a situation in which the lack of light signifies a deterioration in quality and is manifested primarily in a decrease in liquidity. The selfie camera has an 8 megapixel camera and is not outstanding, but it provides a reasonable performance that allows you to share your self-portraits without much discomfort at all. [Gallery columns = "2" ids = "718524,718508"] You can always turn this and that in an elaborate editor, so you should be happy.
Xiaomi's smartphones are known for offering over-the-top CPUs in their class. In this aspect, Xiaomi does not compromise – Xiaomi Mi6 drives Snapdragon 835 – you will find it. In Xperia XZ Premium or HTC U11. That's right, these smartphones are much more expensive than the Mi6. Up to 6GB of RAM and UFS 2.1 memory. This is a performance delicatessen, which is confirmed by tests: [test slug = "pcmark-android" order = "desc" selected = "22318" virtual = "pcmark-android-work" Type = "single" product_id = "22186,22218,22222,22254,22134,21630,21582,21416,21772,22182,21666,22318,22300,22170"] [/ wptab] [wptab style = "4" title = "AnTuTu"] [test slug = "android-antutu-6" order = "desc" selected = "22318" virtual = "antutu-total-6" type = "single" product_id = "22186,22218,22222,22254, 22364,21630,21582,21416,21772,22182,21666,22318,22300,22170 "] [/ wptab] [test3 =" 3dmark "order =" desc " Selected = "22318" virtual = "3dmark-ice-storm-unlimited-total" type = "single" product_id = "22186,22218,22222,22254,22134,21630,21582,21416,21772,22182,21666,22318, T-Rex "] [test slug =" gfxbench-fps "order =" desc "selected =" 22318 "type =" single "virtual = "T-rex-3-onscreen" product_id = "22186,22218,22222,22254,22134,21630,21582,21416,21772,22182,21666,22318,22300,22170 [Wptab style = "4" title = "Manhattan"] [test slug = "gfxbench-fps" order = "desc" selected = "22318" type = "single" virtual = "manhattan-3- Onscreen "product_id =" 22186,22218,22222,22254,22134,21630,21582,21416,21772,22182,21666,22318,22300,22170 "] [/ wptab] [wptab_end] Each of the Xiaomi Mi6 benchmarks is located in It's the toughest, and often the fastest smartphone ever tested by gsmManiaKa. Importantly, performance from synthetic tests is transferred to practice. The Xiaomi Mi6 is a hell of a fast phone that can handle any program or game without any hassles . Applications are fired at lightning speed, especially when we disable system animations. They are nice and smooth, but they also make the smartphone seem a little slower than the HTC U11, where the manufacturer shortens it. It's just the looks and Mi6 will satisfy even the most demanding user. At this speed you can fall in love. The support for the processor is 6GB of RAM , which we will not find in many of the flagships of more reputable brands. Resource management is brilliant – in the background it can run multiple processes at the same time, and return to them is fast and efficient. To achieve this, one thing to keep in mind: energy-saving mode, which by default limits the programs in memory by default. The Xiaomi developers have been able to choose which processes can work seamlessly when this mode is enabled, so everything really depends on our preferences. Remember that blocked apps do not send notifications. The graphics are Adreno 540 , which in this case must work with Full HD resolution. This makes even the most demanding games are not for the Xiaomi Mi6 any challenge and will not be long. Under the GPU load it does very well and once I managed to reduce its power by 25%, but it would not do without high ambient temperature (about 30 degrees) and screen set to high brightness. In more realistic applications, the system works at full power for up to several minutes and the temperature of the housing does not exceed 40 degrees. This is a great choice for all mobile game fans.
Quality of conversations, memory and communication
As Xiaomi Mi6 phone is doing just fine. The handset is loud enough, and the sound of both sides is loud and clear. I have not noticed any problems with lost coverage either with the Play network (in home coverage) or with T-Mobile. The nice addition is Dual SIM , allowing you to use two numbers at a time (standby). Supported cards are nanoSIM. There is no slot for memory cards, so you have to be satisfied with built-in memory. The variant I have tested has 64GB of memory, of which we have access to about 55 GB. I will add that there are no problems with supporting OTG accessories of any type. The Xiaomi Mi6 does not and will not have a global version with full bandwidth support, so it does not offer LTE 800 MHz connectivity . It probably will not change when the smartphone goes to the official Polish distribution. I did not notice that it was a problem because LTE coverage was strong and stable not only in the city, but also in the suburbs and in my hometown. However, I can not guarantee that your accommodation will be similar, so I recommend that you check the coverage of your operator's network.Other aspects of communication do not raise any objections. Wi-Fi 802.11ac with MU-MIMO works in the 2.4 and 5 GHz range, providing a stable connection. With a good router, the coverage is easy even when you change the storey. Unlike the HTC U11, there is no shortage of Bluetooth connectivity in version 5.0 . At minus minus no FM radio and USB Type C connector only in 2.0 standard. As for GPS, it was only during the first navigation that Xiaomi Mi6 needed more time to locate me. Later this situation did not repeat and from this module work I am finally very satisfied. For those interested – the phone does not offer support for Galileo. NFC is up and running .
The Xiaomi Mi6 fingerprint reader hit the lower frame below the screen, where it was hidden in a home key that was concave rather than convex; This is a touch pad that can not be clicked. His actions will be positive , although it is necessary to take care of his good configuration. The scanner uses ultrasound to operate, so in theory it should handle even a wet finger, but in practice it works very average.
In my opinion, the disadvantage of the Xiaomi Mi6 is the lack of a 3.5 mm jack . True to the set comes a special USB C-type adapter, but it does not solve the problem of not listening to music and loading the smartphone at the same time. Believe me, I do it quite often, even when traveling. Xiaomi explains that this step was to help save space in the casing, making it possible to implement a battery with a large capacity. This argument only convinces me.No other Hi-Fi system was decided, so the manufacturer used the standard Qualcomma transducer. Sound quality is just good. Xiaomi Mi6 is not the best music smartphone on the market, but it should meet the needs of most users. You have to take care of the headset because it is not included. On the plus side, there is the presence of stereo speakers . One of them is located front and also serves the conversation and the other one is on the lower edge. Both play really decent. Maybe they are not the best speakers on the market, but they play clean enough and loud to outdo the mono speakers of the Galaxy S8 or LG G6 and match it with the Xperia XZ Premium.
Xiaomi Mi6 works under Android 7.1.1 Nougat , which has been modified with a MIUI system overlay that claims to be a separate system. In my copy ROM Global version 18.104.22.168 and NCAMIEC are downloaded. This is the official software, as evidenced by the availability of updates in the form of OTA, which is not in the so-called. syfMIUI. [Gallery ids = "718572,718574,718576,718578,718580,718582,718584,718586,718588,718590,718592,718594,718596,718598,718600,718602,718604,718606,718610,718614,718616"] MIUI is One of the most elaborate interfaces in the world of Android , which primarily focuses on broadly understood personalization. To describe all possible options, I will need to create a separate entry to not drag this test indefinitely. Here I will mention only the most important possibilities:
- The cyclically changing wallpaper on the lock screen,
- Theme support
- Reading mode and color change and contrast,
- Sound enhancements (EQ and MiSound),
- Background job management application,
- Child mode,
- Control of notification diode action,
- One-handed mode with scaling to a fixed diagonal,
- Application cloning,
- The other space, ie a separate interface, eg a private one and a second service,
- Control Panel – monitor data, clean up unnecessary files, control battery status and application privileges, anti-virus,
- ROM Global offers pre-installed Google applications,
- Lack of work with two applications on a split screen; Nougat it supports, but MIUI not yet.
Summary and evaluation
Xiaomi Mi6 is one of those flagships that should offer as little as possible. And in this role is perfect, but do not be convinced that for an amount of less than 2000 gold you will get everything the best – no miracles.
Advantages Xiaomi Mi6
Let's start with positives. The Xiaomi Mi6 is an efficient and fast smartphone that can be a model for any device on the market in terms of work culture. It's not only powerful components but also great software optimization, which is really commendable, because we're not talking about minor changes to the interface. MIUI is a comprehensive overlay, full of options and beautiful animations, but still does not upset with thoughts or drawings. It's true that this software has to be learned, but easy to like. On the plus side, there is also the presence of Dual SIM , robust communication facilities, really good quality workmanship and pleasant presence, although fans of frameless smartphones will not be particularly pleased. The battery life is good enough that we can enjoy the smartphone all day without undue restriction. The Xiaomi Mi6 also has a very nice screen that is one of the best IPS panels on the market. Bright, readable in every class and well calibrated. True, there are no such curiosities as HDR support, but it's more of a bajer than the need for a happy function.
The disadvantages of Xiaomi Mi6
What's the downside? Me most disappointing shortcomings . Slots for memory cards, 3.5 mm headphone jack, waterproof. As long as the latter element is simply welcome, the absence of the other two is difficult to accept. But I know that not everyone shares this point of view. The lack of support for LTE in the 800 MHz band may be problematic. Camera should be better . In its price class it does well, winning with the mediocre and coming to a level playing field with last year's flagship. Unfortunately, in more difficult lighting conditions it is a loser. This is not the level of the best photomarketers.
Is it worth to buy Xiaomi Mi6?
By combining it all in all, I came to the conclusion that the decisive factor in the Xiaomi Mi6 rating will be the price. And that's great because in Chinese stores you can buy this smartphone for less than 2000 zlotys , and after you add VAT and how to avoid it, the price from the very attractive is getting sensational. That is why I finally say that I can recommend the Xiaomi Mi6 to all maniacs, for whom a great value for money is a priority when buying a new smartphone. In this respect it is unrivaled equipment ..[temperature2 product_id = "22318"]
