Since I saw the daylight scandal of excessive heating of the most powerful unit in the range of Qualcomm (Snapdragon 810), all fingers are pointing producer mentioned and smartphones with the problematic system suffer due to bad press. But in fact the problem concerns only the title SoC? A similar defect can show and other models, and Snapdragon 810 is just a scapegoat? I decided to check it out.

Before we get to present and discuss the results I just want to mention that all the data collected in this publication are pictorial material – testing is not conducted under laboratory conditions.

How tested?

Temperature measuring devices applications served me CPU-Z and CPU Temperature – both easily can be downloaded from the Google store. Selected programs gather to-date information on the CPU temperature and battery. I was interested mainly first values, but unfortunately it turned out that not all devices it was possible to read them (the reason were blocked by sensors or they just ran out), I included so the heat was the battery. The temperature is checked during six different tests – during charging, immediately after waking the device from standby, and also while playing Asphalt 8: Airborne: respectively five and ten minutes. On select models, also I made a complementary 30-minute test requiring the use of Mortal Kombat X and test artificially aggravating using the application components selected phones.

I tested?

For the tests, joined the seventeen facilities, including ten smartphones and two tablets: HTC One M9, the Sony Xperia Z 3 +, LG G3, LG G2 Mini, Sony Xperia Z2, the HTC Desire 820, P8 Huawei, Lenovo Tab S8-50L, NVIDIA shiled Tablet, UMI Hammer, ASUS ZenFone 2, Honor 6 Plus, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, the LG G Flex 2, LG G4 and Sony Xperia Z3. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this material – spreading equipment for testing and provided screenshots. Before we get to the bottom, below a short description of each of the models. The HTC Desire 820 is responsible for performance 8-core Snapdragon processor 615 (4x ARM Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.5 GHz + 4x ARM Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.0 GHz). Sony Xperia Z2 is the oldest model in comparison – debuted in February last year, but does not change the fact that it continues to be one of the strongest units in the assortment of Sony. Performance guarantee here 3 GB of RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AB) clocked at 2.3 GHz. The image is presented on the 5.2 "screen FHD. The configuration allows for a lot, but it goes by the rise in temperature – even during everyday use and therefore it is logical that while playing or longer consume Internet content, still increasing and is felt. UMI Hammer is a classic example of Chinese mobile middle class. It implemented in the 64-bit, 4-core MediaTek MT6732 processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and a 5-inch display with HD resolution. The smartphone is one of the coldest on our list, which is confirmed charts. ASUS ZenFone 2 is probably the most generously endowed phablet in our comparison – 4 GB of RAM and 4-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor with integrated graphics chip PowerVR G6430. Such a configuration is to ensure smooth operation of the system presented on the 5.5-inch matrix with a resolution of Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels). Unfortunately, it was not given to us to check the temperature of the SoC for either sensors or were blocked them just ran out. In return, I checked the temperature of the battery and I listed it with some models. Browsing screenshots have observed an increase in temperature of about 15 degrees Celsius between standby mode and 10-minute gameplay Asphalt 8. LG G2 mini is a hot proposition Koreans. Mid-range smartphone with a screen 4.7 "with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels debuted in January 2014, and therefore should not surprise anyone that the performance guarantees Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8226) clocked at 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. It turned out that the LG G2 mini is by nature a warm smartphone, because even in standby mode the temperature was much higher than the competition. The same applies to the situation during the charging process. Also in the case of Honour 6 Plus model (we had a chance to test it) I made ​​a battery temperature measurement only because I was not able to reliably determine how the 8-core Kirin HiSilicon 925 (4x ARM Cortex A15 clocked at 1.8 GHz + ARM Cortex-A7 clocked at 1.3 GHz) falls on the background of the new generation units used in Huawei P8. Too bad. But I do know that the battery of Honor 6 Plus with a 3-gigabyte RAM and characterized by a diagonal screen 5.5 "and a resolution of FHD heats up less, than that of the ASUS ZenFone 2. NVIDIA SHIELD tablet is equipped with a display diagonal of 8" on which the image is presented with a resolution of WUXGA (1920 x 1200 pixels). Computational power supply 4-core processor NVIDIA Tegra K1 (ARM Cortex-A15). It is responsible for the graphics, while the 192-core mobile Kepler supported by a 2-gigabyte RAM working memory. I have the impression that the powerful hardware configuration dedicated to lovers of mobile gameplay a little bored with the standard proposals are available on Google Play. Sony Xperia Z3 + is one of the two smartphones, because of which I decided to conduct this test. Performance guarantees 8-core Snapdragon processor 810 (4x ARM Cortex-A57 + ARM Cortex-A53), and 3 GB of RAM. The image is presented on the 5.2 "screen with a resolution of 1080p FHD. Such hardware configuration guarantees a very high performance. And as with heating up? CPU to the hard work you have to make, as Asphalt 8 for her undemanding, so this model has been subjected to an additional 30-minutowemu test using Mortal Kombat X. The results are interesting. we tested HTC One M9, the same as its predecessor utilizes a Snapdragon 810 and 3 GB of RAM, but is equipped with a screen size of five inches with a resolution of Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels). Leaving aside the question of the remaining specification smart phones differ from each component inputs consumed the housing and therefore different dissipates heat. Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the only representative in this test uses an Exynos 5 Octa 5433 with a dedicated graphics chip Mali-T760, accompanied by 3 GB of RAM. The image is presented WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) and therefore components have no right to be bored. Indeed it is, it turned out that one test is the hottest offering. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge devices is representative of the highest class. Class in which it was decided to use the world's first mobile system manufactured in 14nm. The heart of a smartphone with a screen beaded on both edges (resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels) is the Exynos 7420 (4x ARM Cortex-A57 clocked at 2.1 GHz + 4x ARM Cortex-A53 – 1.5 GHz) with a powerful graphics chip Mali-T760MP8. The smartphone is not so cold as it all seems. LG G Flex 2 is the world's first smartphone with "hot" system Snapdragon 810, in which the LG decided to use a standard as today's times the screen resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and high-speed RAM type LPDDR4. So strong connection and a lot of software patches translate into a good result in one of our tests. In comparison there were also the only flagship model in which it was decided to use the 6-core Snapdragon 808 system, which consists of two cores ARM Cortex-A57 and four auxiliary architecture based on ARM Cortex-A53 with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz. Responsible for the graphics integrated Adreno 418 graphics chip, accompanied by a 3-gigabyte main memory DDR3 RAM with a capacity of 15 GB / s. It turned out that the display WQHD is not a big challenge for units supplied by Qualcomm, which is found in the tested by us, LG G4. And at the end of the Sony Xperia Z 3, which is the flagship product for 2014 and the first half of 2015 years from the Japanese. Here the company firmly set on compromise and decided to make only cosmetic changes in the components relative Sony Xperia Z2. In fact still receives 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 801 but MSM8974AC version – clocking rose to 2.5 GHz. Still, the unit accompanied by 3GB of RAM, and the image is presented on the 5.2 "screen FHD.

Time for results

It should be noted that these temperatures on the CPU and, therefore, the real feeling during use will be completely different for each of the tested models. As is known, each of the manufacturers decide to use other materials for the production of the housing, the other is also a distribution of components. To this, there are still real feelings, and here much depends on the user – for one thing may be hot, and the other just warm. However, you can be confident that no matter tested model on the cover of eggs smartphone can not fry;)

Asphalt 8: Airborne

5-minute game Asphalt 8: Airborne is the most tested sample proverbial piece of cake. But only for the majority, because in this test utterly lost HTC Desire 820 – 72 degrees Celsius is definitely too much. Obviously this is a temperature detected by one of the sensors within the device, but it can already be noticeable felt. Fortunately rear panel captures the warmth, so phablet quickly cools. It should also be noted that productivity is not falling smartphone, so from the beginning to the end of the entertainment we can count on the same framerate. More interestingly, the extra five minutes, the system seems to get used to the conditions within the housing, since CPU-Z pointed 67 degrees. Another heater turned out to be the LG G2 Mini, which recorded 68 degrees after 5-minutes of communing with Asphalt 8. However, there is nothing extraordinary – compact housing conditions conducive to growth temperature. Another five minutes did not bring any new value, and therefore the smartphone is clearly a problem with cooling a high temperature and the temperature inside. It also showed further tests. Sony Xperia Z3 + and LG G3, though different from each other diametrically applied components, are very similar in terms of heating up. The first test showed 58 degrees Celsius in the case of a Japanese competitor and one degree less in Korean. The similarities are more. In the case of both models not only heats up the rear panel, but also the display – it's all wine slim frame. The high temperature in the LG G3 can still understand – the central body can not cope too well with high resolution, and therefore are squeezed all the juice out of it. Feels temperature is not worrisome and does not cause discomfort. The second test (after 10 minutes) gave us much more interesting results – 62 degrees in the Xperia Z 3 + and 71 degrees in the case of the LG G3. The coldest turned out to be – wait for it – HTC One M9. I myself was surprised, but after five minutes the CPU temperature rose to just 41 degrees. It really is a very good result. The result, which in little impact on raising the temperature of the metal housing. And while HTC may have reason to be proud, let us remember that the manufacturer is trying to eliminate the overheating problem przyblokował CPU processor, which is not able to muster the 100% power. Another five minute drive through the beautiful Dubai is only an extra four degrees C. Cool coped Huawei – this year's flagship has a temperature of 48 degrees after five minutes, which after only five successive rises by one degree. And although for these values ​​can boast producer, it should be a reproach sensible temperature, which is due to slim design is more palpable in the display. For ASUS ZenFone 2, and Huawei Honor 6+, we only temperatures of the battery, but these also nicely show an increase in temperature in both cases. It is much less spectacular than for the SoC, but worth noting. After the first five minutes, the Chinese representative pointed 37 degrees Celsius – the next five an increase of two foot. The warmer in this test was the ASUS ZenFone 2: 5 minutes – 39.4, 10 minutes – 43.7. Both in this comparison lose Sony Xperia Z3 + (32.7 ° C, 34 ° C), LG G3 or HTC One M9.

During standby and charging

The coolest standby proved UMI Hammer, whose temperature does not exceed even thirty degrees (27.8 ° C). Most of the tested sample was characterized by while temperatures oscillating between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius. The warmest proved to be models with the logo of the South Korean company LG. Last year smartphone showed 47 degrees Celsius (Battery 26.3 ° C) and the temperature LG G2 mini standby also reached 47 degrees Celsius. The charging process in the majority of cases went very peacefully, and the temperature increased slightly. For the most part, because my attention turned LG G3, which warms up to 72 degrees Celsius. Even the controversial smartphone Sony Xperia Z3 + application CPU-Z showed only 36 ° C.

Motal Kombat X

For this test, they joined five devices: HTC One M9, the LG G3, HTC Desire 820, NVIDIA shiled Tablet, and Sony Xperia Z 3 +. The first, after thirty minutes of uninterrupted fights warmed up to 63 degrees, and battery temperature jumped to 39.5 ° C. If the HTC One M9 results are as follows: 60 ° C showed one of the sensors and the battery warm up to 43.2 ° C. Hottest proved HTC Desire 820, which does not resist load and requiring game which resulted in intermittent slow down the graphics. The temperature within thirty minutes increased to eighty-five degrees Celsius. Heat generated by the CPU was felt strongly in the vicinity of the main camera lens. A second and equally "hot commodity" was a LG G3, although in the case of temperature rise stopped at 77 ° C.

The test selected models artificially aggravating application components

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 just like the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, the LG G Flex 2, LG G4 and Sony Xperia Z 3 and additionally Huawei P8, along with Sony Xperia Z 3 + tested an application that artificially burdened components, thus leading to a situation in which may overheat. The results are really interesting. Missing six degrees so we can conclude that the processor to "boil". 😉 It is better if this year for the flag from Samsung, since this is the second warmest device in this assay – 81 degrees Celsius. With very good test coped LG G Flex 2, which ended it with the temperature only 47 degrees. It must be remembered that this is due to necessary modifications in the software and artificial drags processor. What's interesting there is little difference in temperature (a sudden 6 ° C) between Sony Xperia Z3 +, and Xperia Z3. It's quite interesting the more that clashed two models one producer with very different technical specifications. It is thus seen that Sony is providing newer builds of Xperia Z 3 + eliminates the problems associated with excessive heat emission.


It is not that the most efficient system in the assortment of American concern is cold. There is, however, too, so that always heats up beyond measure by making use of the device cumbersome. As you can see Qualcomm's problems began much earlier, and the best proof of that is the 615 Snapdragon used in the test HTC Desire 820, which in many a situation reaches a much higher temperature than the Snapdragon 810. And yet the latter is often bemoaned by reviewers – probably because of the high-end dedicated devices requires more than a dedicated unit models from mid-range. It is true, however, that Snapdragon 810 can reach very high temperatures in extreme situations. I was able to remove 87 degrees Celsius in the Sony Xperia Z3 +, recording over 18-minute video (also while doing photo). The question is whether such an operation can be called a standard use of the device? The problem of temperature increase also occurs during video recording at 4K resolution. I obtained the clip length just 2:25 minutes, followed by the application to close due to excessive temperature rise. Personally, I did not feel the discomfort associated with the CPU temperature during daily use of the Sony Xperia Z3 + (increase is more natural and highlighted the resulting screen), but for my editorial colleague who every day is a user equipment from Apple, this difference is already noticeable. The tests also showed that the central units developed by Samsung Exynos also are prone to overheating, but the writing is already less often. The temperature of up to 94 degrees Celsius in last year's arrangement is a perfect example of that Snapdragon 810 has become a sort of scapegoat in the scandal related to the overheating of mobile systems. Very well with the problem of excessive heat they coped Intel, Huawei, and MediaTek. Their central units are not susceptible to heat up even during more demanding tasks. In the case of Huawei, it is worth mentioning that it is the warmest SoC of the foregoing. I'm afraid that the real problem of excessive heating up until it appears. From year to year we get at the disposal of the device not only more efficient, but also more and more slender. Smartphones that exceed the computing power of computers a few years ago. But unlike the latter, they are not able to cope with the constant increase in temperature during loading, and none of the manufacturers have not thought yet about the use of additional cooling. And I do not mean here the natural heat sinks in the form of a metal case, the body of aluminum or other metal inserts. Here you need something more – Cooling dedicated to mobile devices that Fujitsu has developed. It is based on a steam chamber and a heating system which consists of copper tubes filled with liquid (that draws heat away from the mobile system and prevents it from excessive heat build-up). Copper installation dissipates heat through evaporation of the fluid in the tubes, which, when cool again changes state – condenses at the coldest point. And cooling process starts from the beginning.

Future verify that the technology developed by Fujitsu will be implemented for mobile devices. Or maybe you will too, so that the producers themselves finally recognize the problem and develop more effective solutions?
